Paint disposal

A friend of mine is moving & has to get rid of paint & other material – not massive amount, but substantial. It looks as if all the NYC sites are closed for Covid. Any thoughts about what she should do?

@no permitz: some clowns around the corner from a building i was working in put cans of paint in the trash. sanitation picked them up and tossed them in the back and came to the building i was in. they tossed more trash in and hit the compactor. one of the cans of paint exploded and sent blue paint all over a car. of course it happen in front of our building so the owner of the car tried to pin it on us or someone in our building. fortunately it was a very unique blue color.

on the more serious side, when i was first in NYC, someone had put a full gallon of acid in the trash. when the sanitation guy hit the compactor, the acid exploded and hit him in the face. he died a horrific 5 minute death.

There are commercial products to harden paint for easy disposal. Look for “waste paint hardener”.

I’d double bag (heavy duty) the cans and put a few at the curb each pickup. I realize it is not the correct way, but what else can you do? If you try to put them all out at once, they will figure out what it is and won’t take it.

saw dust. if she can get her hands on saw dust that will work. that is what we use. i don’t have a whole lot of it now and i am in queens, otherwise i would offer.

is there an amount she can donate and are those the places that are closed? like materials for the arts? the build it green (big reuse) used to have a room full of paint cans in their astoria location. what are the other materials? i bring my leftover stuff to Habitat for Humanity in Woodside and hope they are not closed at this time.

also, if there is enough that someone would want some, post it here. we use old paints ourselves because when we finish something, such as a door, we prime, paint, sand, fill small nicks, spot prime, paint, sand, paint and because of this we NEVER dispose of oil base product even if it is not the color that we need for the final coats on a project. people can use off colors as undercoat on walls. when we had to move from dark red in our dining room do a light color, we not only had to prime but it took a a few coats of paint and we used a left over color for this – very possibly one i grabbed from the side of the road someplace.

if she has any gallons of ben moore oil, which is what we use exterior, i might be interested. i don’t use latex fast enough to store it.
