Outside faucet installed

Hi, We want to install an exterior faucet so that watering the garden, which is now a lot with dirt, would be more convenient.

I am assuming that this would fall under the services of a plumber? Would a building permit be needed?

I was wondering what the ball park would be to install an exterior faucet. We have a 2 family house with a finished basement.

Also, what if anything can be done to avoid freezing in winter?

my understanding was that before the city installed water meters, they billed based on the number of fixtures one had and the reason the house do not have outdoor spigots is they were billed for that so many of them had them but they were installed in the basement. this is what a customer told me years ago.

Just to add, I always install a shut off valve going to a frost free sillcock as well. Unless you’re washing a car on a warmer day, not sure there’s much else to use it for over the Winter.

We recently had this done and are enjoying our new civilized spigot — just like living in the ‘burbs. You need a licensed plumber. They will file whatever small plumbing permit is needed and you don’t have to worry about it. Ours cost $800 as part of a larger job with a contractor. The water line was already close by in the cellar, so your mileage may vary. We have a shut off valve in the cellar on the line about a foot before it goes outside. There is another shut off valve for the line at the other end of the cellar. To winterize it, at the start of heating season every year, we simply shut off the line at the valve, then open the spigot outside to get all the water out, then close the spigot again. Then we turn it on again in the spring when it is safe to do so.

My sister’s pipe burst in the wall just past the frost valve. Whoever seals that wall needs to insulate. Better yet shut the valve (there should be one to isolate the outdoor bib) in the cellar and open the faucet every year when heating season starts.

I have had contractors on my block use my water and track a mess, so another reason to be able to shut it off from in the house.

1) Yes a licensed plumber should do this. The plumber has to files a plumbing report with DOB. Not a big deal.

2) You can just turn off (there will be a valve inside) the water when it gets very cold in the winter.

what dibs says is best. the faucet is really like a hydrant, the valve seat to which is set back in the wall (the entire unit is about 12″ long. most people do not seem to use these- i see them out on long island on the homes of pretty serious gardeners. what the rest of us do is have a valve inside and as the colder weather rolls in we close that valve and open the outside faucet to drain the water.
