If the tenant will agree to 50-50 with the stipulation that the cover(s) stay with the apartment, this seems like a pretty good deal. Radiator covers are a relatively inexpensive way to add value, both aesthetic and actual. We “installed” them throughout our house when we moved in and are very happy with them (I put “installed” in quotes, because they just slip over the radiator and sit on the floor).

Hi you two…no, not a new tenant. Been our tenant for over 4 years. They have school-aged kids so I am wondering why they waited until now to make the request. In any event, I don’t feel like springing $700 or more for covers unless I’m obligated to.

There is no obligation. Most Brooklyn houses with radiators do not have covers. They became popular probably in the 1950s & 60s. And, they restrict heat flow.

I don’t think they restrict heat flow. If anything, they throw the heat into the room with less going straight up to the ceiling. And they add surface to the apartment to put things on.

Right – just looked a little more and saw that it hasn’t been signed by the Governor – amazing that it can take that long. Landlord would likely be liable anyway though if a tenant gets hurt/burned – especially if they asked for covers previously.
