Open Electrical Permit

Thank you for all of your suggestions. Unfortunately the buyer wants nothing to do with the open permit, so will not accept a credit. This work was done in 2014. The electrician is long gone. I heard from the gc that he was hiding issues, and he caused the gc a world of hurt with the trail of mess he left behind. He has moved out of state (don’t know where). I am trying to get a new electrician to close out the permit, but no one seems to want to touch it. It was an electrical box.

Does anyone have a connection at the Department of Buildings?

We have an open electrical permit on our apartment from 2014. The electrician and partners are all MIA. Website is 404, phone numbers disconnected. We reached out to the contractor that subcontracted the work to the electrician but he isn’t responding.

Tried having a different electrician close the permit, but DOB is saying original electrician’s company is “still active” so someone else can’t close it out.

How can I get this permit closed?! It’s holding up the sale of our co-op.

Vela, if i were stuck in this i would do what no permits suggests. No permits is the person to listen to when you have to get around the system.

This sort of thing has probably been written more about with plumbing permits.

I took a job in a building that was trying to get a change to the c of o and had all sorts of open permits. My job was to follow the direction of the expeditor and get contractors together to close the stuff. The expiditor interfaced with the dob. Even with a person who i felt was good (gary johnson, johnson design), this took years. And it cost money. This might take time anyway but if some other issue comes up in the process, another delay and another reason to avoid the dob. Do what no permits says.

I do not know how your relationship was with the electrician but if it had been good, your other option is to try to locate the electrician and find out what his situation is, being sensitive to the fact that something could have gone wrong in this person’s life. see if you can get him to understand your situation and persuade him to find a way to help. If this were me and there were no phones working, i would go to his house. Keep in mind he owes you the sign off BUT to bother someone at their house like this, even if he wronged you, you have to take the position that you are asking for his help. Don’t put him on the defensive. most professionals understand their obligations and will help if they CAN, perhaps even if his business is not functioning the way it used to but he still hss the means.

Btw, i had to chase long lost contractors for the building i mention above and when i found them a lot of what i heard was that they were owed money, progress payments had been late, etc. If you do not know what the relationship between the gc and electrician was, you might find out. If you find the guy and he is annoyed, listen to him and let him complain and then see if you can get him to help.
