The mechanism pictured (hope it’s clear enought) is broken, and I would rather not totally scrap it and have some new and differently sized piece that will require adjusting the door opening too much. Is there a place that sells these? Brooklyn or Manhattan. Thanks!

houseofantiquehardware.com sells replacement mortise lock sets. Dimension may be slightly different but you may find something that will work with your existing spindle and knobs.

houseofantiquehardware.com is great. you can also find lots of those on ebay….oftentimes complete with knobs and a key that works.

I’m pretty sure you can open that up, and either replace one of the small metal levers or springs, add some wd-40 and you will be good to go. I reworked most of the old mortise locks in my house. 1\. Take it apart, note what went where (take a picture) 2\. Wirebrush everything 3.Paint or polish the housing as you see fit. 4\. oil and re-seat the parts. You will be good to go- You can go to Eddie’s Salvage, or Moon River Chattel and look for a similarly sized old lock and tear it apart for parts in yours that may be snapped, but usually these are thick metal parts and the only thing wrong is dirt, rust, or the spring unseated itself. Alternatively, there are few guys on ebay who specialize in restoring these- cheers-

Olde Good Things has these two — they’re pricier, for sure, but might be a good last resort.
