NYSERDA Enegy Audit + Contractor Recommendations

We are looking to do an energy audit through NYSERDA program, with the goal of financing the qualifying projects through the program. 2 fam in Kings County, we do not qualify for Assisted Home Performance or EmPower New York.

We have been through this process before so generally familiar, however the first time we had a free energy audit done by a company that recommended an absolutely terrible contractor. They did insulation and boiler replacement from oil to gas, but they did shoddy work and created issues which we are still digging out of. But, we did not vet the contractor properly so shame on us.

Now I know there are more qualifying projects we have on the house based on the old report, but the old audit report now expired so we need to restart the process with a new audit. Looking for advice from folks who have made it through this process including 1) energy audit 2) execution of qualifying construction projects 3) financing through NYSERDA / on the bill payments with a contractor they recommend.

Because the NYSERDA website lists only 5 contractors on its site who can do the free audit, there have to be more options – this was the path we went down last time which got us into trouble:
