Noisy upstairs neighbors

you are going to have to get the landlord involved. You shouldn’t have to request any purchases of your neighbors as a renter, but you do need to have a heart to heart with LL and find out if they are aware and if they ultimately decided to do nothing due to costs involved. In which case they are prob resigned to turnover in these kinds of units. Now that you are living there – does the rent seem to be under market and reflect such noise?

Hi, I just moved into a new apt and the walls/ceilings are paper thin. Next door noise I can deal with but the ceiling noise is driving me insane. Constant banging and talking over my head. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to sound proof my ceiling? It’s a rental so I don’t want to spend a lot of money.

Have you talked to the people upstairs? Most leases in NYC stipulate that floors must be carpeted (I think to 80% minimum). You might suggest to the neighbors that they should comply w/ that.

Most leases actually don’t have a carpet or rug clause and there’s no law requiring it. Sometimes co-ops have it.
