no more furnace?

has anyone had experience using only modern “heat pumps” aka AC units for their heat in the whole house? does it work? it seems too good to be true… but all the pros are telling us not to worry and this will be fine.

It is just because it utilizes more energy and that is only the reason that causes more energy bill.

@bocu, a properly installed and designed hyper heat system works. I would get your installers back out.

I installed hyper heat system as sole source in a 1250 SF frame house (new insulated) in October. Through the first winter I would say that from 20 degrees and up, it is suitable. Upper Floor units are absolutely sufficient. For first floor, on days under 20 degrees, indoor temp would range from 63-68 even when operating at higher set temps. Tolerable. However, my electricity bills skyrocketed to $550-650 during January and February. Master Plumber I welcome any comparable installs and recommendations but I believe I may be forced to install a secondary heat source on the first floor/basement.

Every renovation I’m involved in at the moment that is installing heat pumps is also installing a secondary heat source. The hyper heat function seems to be a game changer but people are still complaining that their heating bills resemble their air conditioning bills. Engineers are being careful with designing these systems. I see it on many of the sets of plans I get now.

Do you have the complete HVAC system?
Yes, it is true that now a day, a furnace is not that much popular in residential areas.

Trane themselves say Heat Pumps units usually should not be used as primary heat below 25/20 Degrees Fahrenheit. That being said they mostly refer to completely detached suburb homes; our rep has said Brooklyn applications are looked at differently.

You’re going to want to make sure that you have a system that has a feature akin to Mitsubishi’s HyperHeat. We are in a condo currently and we have been using a Mitsubishi mini-split system WITHOUT the HyperHeat as our heating and when it gets really, really cold (think 10 to 0 or lower) it shuts down, which as you can imagine is the WORST possible time for it to do so. After doing some investigation and getting a few providers out to look at it, they all told us it was a design of the system to save the compressor. We have mobile radiant oil heaters for those nights and we’ve been fine, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a huge disappointment. The providers have told us that we would probably be fine had we gotten the units with the HyperHeat functionality, however, to hear it told all systems are less effective the colder it gets (true NY winter cold).

We’ve done it several times and our clients haven’t complained. We tell our clients that it’s a good idea if the walls and roof are insulated and the doors and windows are in good shape.
