New Thermostat

Anyone recommend someone to run a new line from the heater to the thermostat. Wanted to move the thermostat from the ground floor to the second floor and also be able to install a smart thermostat instead of the old fashion one

I’ll third the ecobee here. We have it on a one pipe steam system, combined with temp sensors throughout the house. You can use one or more sensors to drive the heat and that’s very useful to balance the system and eliminate cold spots… and rebates made it essentially free.

Ecobee and many other thermostats has an optional wireless remote sensors, which can be moved to any location. Sensor in thermostat should be disabled, otherwise thermostat will read average temperature between 2. Keep in mind that sensor location must satisfy few criteria.
Often we install thermostat next to boiler and sensors in the house. When thermostat is connected to WiFi, all control can be done from anywhere from any device, no need to visit thermostat every time to make and adjustment.

Yeah we’re in the same boat as Boo…got an ecobee which let’s us put temperature sensors throughout the house so that the heat can either be set based on room occupancy or you can designate what sensors you want to use as your temperature average based on time of day. For instance at night it only reads the occupied bedrooms and during the day shifts out to only monitor the living areas.

We’ve had it for 2 heat seasons now and it reduced our heating bill. Mjs2191…with a setup like this you could even leave the it where your current thermostat is since you can access through the app. Ours sits on a floor we’re hardly ever on and we don’t even use its temperature reading at all!

Fair enough! Makes sense. A bit of tip: go to Coned’s and National Grid’s rebate section and scope out the deals and sales. I got an Ecobee on discount from Coned and then got an efficiency rebate from Natgrid for the same device, making it all but free.

Hey lurker, I get your point on energy savings but we have an ancient two wire boiler that we hooked up to an ecobee3 and we are happy to be able to adjust/monitor heat remotely. Ecobee also sends us alerts if temp drops too low (handy if you’re concerned about ancient boiler crapping out on you while you’re away) .

Energy savings is one consideration for sure but for us it wasn’t the end all be all.

Also, if you don’t have forced air heat, or central air/AC, a smart thermostat offers little value. They’re attractive and fun for a minute, but they offer efficiency by lowering your heat (or raising the temp for ac) when you aren’t around and with heating systems that you don’t do setbacks there’s really no point. You will never recover the $200 you spend.

The Heating System Unit you have can make this either simple or complex. Make sure if you want to install a “smart” thermostat, you have it done right. Old school thermostats require (normally) different wiring than “smart” thermostats.
