New sash lift broke my window

IMO easier and less expensive to replace the sash. Especially during winter.

We had a room repainted recently, including the double hung windows. I took the opportunity to buy pairs of new sash lifts to replace the cheap, single lifts these Pella windows originally came with. Yesterday I attempted to install them. Easy enough, right? Measure twice and screw. But to my horror, I managed to crack the glass (about an inch) when screwing the first lift into the sash. Presumably, my screwdriver hit the edge of the glass pane — where it’s seated in the sash. Can I safely proceed, if I just attach the lifts as low as possible? The sash isn’t at all deep — just under 1.5 inches) so I don’t have much room to play with. Any suggestions gratefully received.

99% chance that the crack will grow over time. You should be able to order a replacement sash but it won’t be cheap.

If you can get the sash out and get it to a glass guy, he might be willing to open it. First he would have to measure and order a new double pane unit. I think they are like 150 for a typical window. I am not sure what they would charge to visit and replace. I have done it for people i know or as part of a larger job when i am on site but never felt there was enough money in it to offer it as a service.

Not too difficult to replace the glass. Vila Window Repair are my go-to guys for that. What about the sash lifts? Use shorter screws?
