New oak floor estimate - herringbone or chevron pattern
people should keep in mind when doing bigger jobs, it may be worth it to look outside of the city. when we buy a lot of anything wood related, we travel to nassau county. the prices drop. the rents are too high in here. so a place like hall flooring in NHP might be a good place to look if someone is doing a larger job. at the time i used them, i did not price shop because they were the only place that had what we needed. but worth a try.
when price shopping, be aware that there are different grades of wood flooring. the grading standard is set by the National Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association. the grades go like this: select, better, no 1…….. so if you call around, be sure to compare prices on the same grade. you do not want even No 1 grade flooring in your house. i will tell you what no 1 is good for: patching when you will cut the knots out.
if you begin talking about standards with a flooring person and they have never taken the time to look on line at the NWFMA website or their standards, i would venture to say they are not a tru e professional. true professionals go home and read at night. not all the time and i notice as i get older i read less about what i do (and hence no less about certain newer technologies which could be a handicap). but anybody who is serious about what they do, will read and know this stuff and be conversant in it.

I recently got an estimate for 20K to put in a new floor. It’s about 1,000 sq. ft. and I want solid oak in a herringbone or chevron pattern. Does this sound reasonable? Any suggestions of any floor companies I should try for a second estimate?

i don’t understand why these patterns are so popular, they look too busy to me.

Emailed Carlos already! Any other ideas? Anyone put in a floor recently? They say materials have gone up, etc.

For materials you could check out PC Hardwood in Sunset Park (their showroom on the side street door)- but you’d still need someone to do the install. They were about $8/SF for hardwood about a year ago, but I expect prices have only increased.

Ok, forget pc. I use them as well and they have a location over here by me. I like them. This guy is better: jack at ny floor supply just outside lowes front gate. As yo go out the gate look to the left, on the corner.

I agree Steve; my sister was shopping around and found them to have good prices and selection. She made the deal and emphasized needed delivery for Thurs. and they delivered on Monday 3 days earlier!!! She was pleased!!!!

the owner at NY floor supply is very enthusiastic about his business. i got a price from him and a price from PC and a price from lumber liquidators two doors down. NY FLooring was a few cents more a square foot and i still bought it from him. that PC flooring, every time i walk in the one over here by me, i feel like they are asleep. no personality. little effort made. i have not been in the pc flooring on third ave in over a decade so i cannot comment to them.
another really good flooring place is NY Hardwood Floors on like 123 St in manhattan. they used to be in the site where dykes opened a location (is dykes still there?) and they now moved a block away. they would be considered a good floor supply.
for bigger jobs and perhaps a more unique selection, there is Hall Flooring in New Hyde Park. We used them years ago when patching a gymnasium floor that required very narrow maple strips.
