New Brownstoner Format

Why is everything so BIG? When I look at the news section the headline fills half the screen. I can only see half a picture at a time. Is anyone else suffering with the LARGE TYPE edition of Brownstoner? Why cant they just show all the links to off site stories instead of making me click “more news this way”? I tried to give myself time to get used to the new format but it is really much worse – takes much more time to see what’s there and when you scroll down the same stories repeat themselves. On my laptop the forum section doesn’t even load. Anybody else missing the old Brownstoner? Missing the old Brownstoner! Embedded links to older posts don’t work anymore. I just tried pointing someone to an old post that I wrote and the link was a 404. Plus, there’s no way to copy the link easily to say “here, look at this” in response to the questions that come up again and again (bluestone, windows). I took the time to copy-paste some info for someone but I got lazy for the next question. Not that it matters, but I’m a former web designer and used to specialize in USABILITY STUDIES (which it appears the new designers failed to do). Or else, they forgot that they have all kinds of web users on the site (READ: There are a lot of older users that aren’t just reading headlines. And they are typing more than one word answers and/or reading headlines.) Irrespective, the search function is the HEART of this website and there is no excuse for it not working perfectly every time. Someone please fix this.

I agree, lurker (and apologies for my part in bumping your forum post — of course, you could comment on your own post and bump it right back up there). But yes, I agree with you that the forum isn’t serving its posters well. Nor does it help to make a home page story out of a week old forum post where the OP has his/her answer. Back in the good old days, Brownstoner would invigorate a current post as a “Forum question of the day” thread, stirring up interest in the forum and in the post when it is of most use to the OP. .

Yeah this is such a bummer. I’ve helped redesign a site and I know it’s always dicey–people hate change, period. But the site really is less usable than it used to be which must be painful. I haven’t stopped visiting, yet, but I don’t visit the main page at all anymore.

To wit, as I typed this, I had just posted about stuff for free and already it’s bumped down the page because of comments on this post from weeks ago! That just makes no sense. Whoever designed the forum simply didn’t do due diligence on how it was used, squandering what, a decade of posts plus all the goodwill of regulars?

Void seems to be an apt word. Just 11 stories total over the last two full days. And some pretty lame items at that (do Brooklynites really need an “insider’s guide” to tell them there are beaches at Coney Island and Brighton Beach?).
