New Brownstoner Format
Why is everything so BIG? When I look at the news section the headline fills half the screen. I can only see half a picture at a time. Is anyone else suffering with the LARGE TYPE edition of Brownstoner? Why cant they just show all the links to off site stories instead of making me click “more news this way”? I tried to give myself time to get used to the new format but it is really much worse – takes much more time to see what’s there and when you scroll down the same stories repeat themselves. On my laptop the forum section doesn’t even load. Anybody else missing the old Brownstoner? Seriously, that seems to be the main, shared beef about the home page — a lot of us are saying we see a real drop off lately in quality and quantity of content. @nope Well, let’s start with the Forum. Remember, the Forum is essentially a service to the community and provides little by way of monetization to us — and we are happy to provide this service.
The Forum was originally custom built in Movable Type (anyone remember MT?). We moved from MT to the WordPress-based bbPress. bbPress worked pretty well for a while, but maintenance and moderation of bbPress was cumbersome, so we moved to a cloud-based provider (muut), which is where we are right now.
For us, muut is doing a decent enough job overall. They have ventured into the murky waters of commenting and forum solutions, a category that has seen few successes. There are features that you (and we) would like to see (e.g. chronological ordering, timestamps, etc) and we hope that they can deliver them soon.

The problem is change for changes sake, which seems to drive almost all website mods. And with complex systems, something is sure to break.
It does not, however, explain how a redesign could screw up something as simple as a comment form (this one, have you noticed how it “jumps” as you’re typing so you constantly have to readjust the page?) or the pull-down selectors in the Real Estate (I still can’t use them, and I’m a website designer!) Add to that young Turks with 20-15 eyesight who decide that a low-contrast color and overly thin font for text is fine (like here, it isn’t, black serif 12pt font s best, thank you.) Thankfully, Flash seems on its way out, perhaps because of the Ipad not allowing it, so we don’t have to endure the blank page with “Loading”much any more.

Yeah, kind of a non sequitor from brownstoner. How would a user-friendly forum hurt the bottom line, or interesting content like there used to be until the last few months?
More to the point, would it really hurt the bottom line to engage with the community as to what brownstoner is thinking and why in response to the sustained critique that many, many readers are now making.
No one wishes brownstoner anything other than success, but the changes, and lack of substantive discussion about them and the critiques that have resulted, are baffling.

It’s clear Brownstoner is trying to draw people in from search engines, but to me, those are one time clickers. It took years and years to built the community here. I can’t understand what the strategy is. Brownstoner was a huge part of people’s lives and it’s just gone now.

has any one noticed that the new design has made it way harder to simply post on a subject? you have to sign in again and restart the post in order to leave a comment… why did blankslate design such a terrible interface? That , with the entirely vapid news content (what is a garden apartment/ what is a classic six) will kill the site

The forum is pretty much all I ever read any more. I came here a decade ago when I was renovating my wrecked house and needed advice and guidance from others like me, who were doing it out of love, passion and necessity. I like articles and posts about architecture, history and new developments, but I truly want to hear from the users and what they are up to the most. i hate the new forum, no longer works in IE…..ive been on contact and they havent fixed it for 6 months etc.
shows you really can screw up soemthign good quickly if you dont understand what the community wants/needs.

I miss the brownstoner of about 6- 7 years ago. I really hate the format of the site and the dumb never ending scrolling. I too have problems getting the forum to load. If that happens, I don’t bother reloading. I just move on…
