Can anyone suggest who we might call to help track down a mysterious odor that may be coming from the HVAC system, but may not? We moved into our house over a year ago, and the house came with three ductless minisplit units on our top floor. We now know that the top floor was renovated in a fairly shoddy way, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there were things wrong with this installation, or the roofing, insulation, etc. We do know there’s very little insulation in the walls or ceiling. Last summer was fine, but this summer there is a really strong smell in my son’s room, especially on humid days. It smells plasticky- like vinyl. Definitely not a moldy smell, more like melting or hot plastic or chemical. It seems to be mainly occurring when the air conditioning is on, and the smell does seem to orginate from the wall where the unit is located, but it’s hard to tell. When I called an HVAC company mid summer, they said that there was no way a chemical smell could come from the unit if it was working properly (which it is), so I figured it couldn’t be that. But now it’s been a nother month of the smell, and I’m concerned it’s toxic. Can someone suggest either a really good HVAC person to evaluate the problem, and/or a contractor or handyman who might be willing and interested to explore other possibilities (maybe something in the roofing or wall construction) that could be causing the smell? Anyone have any ideas of where this smell might be coming from in your own experience with construction materials? Thanks!

Is the unit still under manufacture warranty? Maybe they can send a rep out for free start there?
