National Grid Replacing Rusted Gas Line Sleeve - experiences?

National Grid came to our house unannounced recently to inspect where the gas lines passes through the foundation (and also to inspect the meter). They said the sleeve is too corroded and they will need to replace it and will be doing so soon. They said they’d only need to dig a few feet out from the house to replace it and then replace a coupling above the meter. And of course gas would be shut off for the duration of the work ( about 4 hours).

Would anyone who had any recent experience with this work care to share what ended up happening?

@OGNewYork No they did not. Ours doesn’t seem old and they are able to do their readings from the street already.

So the National Grid crew came today and the whole process took about 5 hours. They dug down to the pipe in front, cut it off about a foot from the house, replaced that section through the foundation, and added an anti-static device to the main pipe in the cellar (they ended up lowering our meter to make room for this). We have the old bluestone in front of the house and they moved it to the side to dig (our pieces aren’t huge). They temporarily covered the work with asphalt but a specialized crew will be coming back to put the stone back properly (they say).

A neighbor of mine had it done a year ago – just be sure to check the work for a few weeks after – esp. after a heavy rain. He had to have major work done because of leaks – contractor had to lift pavers in front area & dig down to where the pipe is.

Last year National Grid left a note to schedule for inspection at my house. This was done by a 3rd party consulting company, precision pipeline. They said NYS mandate an inspection to the gas pipe sleeve or source line on a regular basis.

Probably similar inspection to what’s happening for you. This is not a bad thing as alot of the sleeve line are old and corroded, plus it’s at no cost to you. Link below for reference.
