National Grid Moratorium

Hey guys,

I am trying to get new service for Gas put in but having trouble because of the dispute between National Grid and the State of NY. This Moratorium has been a disaster. Does anyone know of a work around?

Unfortunately, this is not completely correct. Cuomo ordered that NG restore all existing services that had been temporarily shut off (for example, for renovations), but not new service. That order will have to await the the results of the current investigation being conducted by the Public Service Commission

@chris: and there they told us they could rip the old storage tanks down because they can now bring the gas in by barge. sounds like that is the problem. i suppose i am glad the tanks are gone as i now live close to where two of them were, but it also sounds like they were taken down to sell the land to was was supposed to be a big box store.

bob, i am not sure that the OP was kidding when they said they are going to look into propane. if i was in his position with a stove and could not get national grid in, i would do it again in my own house. my concern would be, where to find someone qualified to do something that is illegal and dangerous because no plumber who is qualified would assume the risks. what i am implying is, seeking someone to do something illegal naturally draws out unqualified people.

i have been on here trying to explain what good jobs look like and how to find good, qualified help. so if you have guy like me, and ask me to run a gas line, and if I accept that job as an unlicensed plumber, there is no limit to knowing what other part of my professional make-up might be lacking (integrity). if i do something like that, something that might be criminal, i might solder the drinking water pipes together with some old lead solder i found or sell you a piece of glass that i claim to be tempered when it is not. we don’t know how far someone who might do something illegal and dangero us might go for their personal gain.

the guy with the caulking the other day asked how to find qualified help; this another way: ask the contractor to do something very illegal and dangerous that you know he is not qualified to do and if he accepts, you now know, you are dealing with someone who might be dishonest.

I got some push back on here the other day. this after someone thanked me for helping them after they hired a shoddy trades person. people on here are having troubling finding professionals and admittedly do not know how to go about that; i just gave them another way to weed them out.

as a professional, i should not have come on here letting people know i did what i did with propane. and i want the OP to know, i would not judge them if they proceeded so long as they read a good bit about it.

Bob, i am not talking to you here; i am talking to the wider audience. i might have gone off topic here but with something as dangerous as gas and unqualified help, any time is a good time to have the discussion about seeking qualified people. people are on here asking for this kind of advice, the caulking guy did the other day. Understand, while i may go on a bit, i am not pulling what i am saying out of the sky. For people who are wondering where i get this nonsense i am spewing: let me say this, i worked in this all my life, hiring, firing, under the supervision of professional facility managers, as a site maintenance superintendent (hands on) and i have a certificate in building management from NYU (the classes being taught by professional engineers and one class by Rick Chandler who i believe now heads the DOB) along with a litany of trades classes. i have had to write requests for proposals and check contractors qualifications; if someone who would do something illegal in a professional environment, we would not hire them.

this was as good as any place to have the discussion.

Steve—no one was really talking seriously about using propane as a substitute for natural gas. I asked if it was possible, starting the thread, but was quickly told that it’s not legal in NYC.

this is the worst thing about what the op is talking about doing with propane: no professional plumber will touch this hook up in a million years; if that thing blows up, he will lose everything and possibly end up with criminal charges (they did it in manhattan over the natural gas explosion). so this leaves the OP to do this on his own or find a “plumber”.

the reason i came back on here is, i am commenting about people who cannot even caulk windows and then i realize the other day i admitted doing something dangerous and illegal in my own house (i was waiting to see if Master Plumber would knock me for it; he should have; i would not even have admitted to it on here if it was still in use as the fire dept would love to pay me a visit; its that bad) and who is to say i know what is safe in plumbing?

To the larger picture that i am trying to paint here with some of my posts, when any of us move out of our specialty, we might do things that are unprofessional, wrong, and dangerous.

try filing a complint with the public utility commission… it worked with a client in manhattan who was being jerked around by ConEd for an oil to gas replacement in which I was involved

You’re not getting a permit to use bottled gas (propane) in your house no matter where you put the (yes, 20-lb max) tank.

you can get an extension hose as well and place the tank outside. be careful. keep in mind that there have been several fires and deaths in the city due to leaking gas and the city went after a group of people who broke laws (criminal charges). be careful. go read about it.

You will be stuck using the stove off of a 20 lb tank as no one delivers the big tanks in the city. the reason i know all of this is i heated my shop with propane and used 20 lb tanks and wanted to get the big tanks. the 20 lb tank is not the worst thing but be aware it is illegal to use inside and again, you do not want to give the insurance company an “out” if there is a fire. i was looking at propane and natural gas heaters on LI and the guy thought i was nuts to put even a 5lb tank inside; they do it in Europe all the time with LP gas which i think is equivalent to propane. i did it here as well, no issues. be careful of leaks and valve it off when not in use as it goes right to the basement.

Most ranges nowadays come interchangable between natural gas and propane. Not sure about hot water heaters or anything else.

FYI: your suggestion re propane though is correct after certain considerations are made. my extended family has used propane for years as they have no natural gas service and my mom still uses it to power her stand by generator. once the machines are adjusted or set to run on propane, there are no issues.

bob, only two 20 lb propane tanks are allowed on a property in NYC (fire code). i am not saying i would not break that code myself, but doing so might give the insurance co an out if there were a fire. also, propane and natural gas behave very differently and require different jets. these are interchangeable on some things and not on others; some things come with both jets. propane is more dangerous as it sinks, so if it is used in a house and there is a leak it will go to the basement, where it will sit. natural gas will rise and simply opening windows alleviates a problem.
