Narrow water heater

Resident2’s story does not corroborate with any other on-demand or tankless water heater user’s I’ve ever heard of. Cutting a fuel bill in half is way beyond the claims even of the tankless heater manufacturers and nearly all new independent testing lacks support of any savings at all. People, me included, want to love these appliances, but there’s not a lot of reason to get there. Because of the venting requirements, installing them legally in NYC is often cost prohibitive.

We are thinking about replacing our hot water heater (it is old and we don’t want to get to the point of having to replace it urgently). However, the stairs to our basement are very narrow (about 21 inches or so). The new hot water heaters seem a lot larger in diameter than the old ones. Anyone else faced this problem? We need at least 50 gallons and want a high efficiency unit with a fast recharge time.

You can pipe two smaller water heaters in parallel There are plenty of 19 inch 40 gallon units available

Look into water on demand hot water heaters. The European imports are better than the American ones.
They come both gas or electric, if you have solar panels; electric is the way to go.
But they are obviously much smaller because there is no tank. Just make sure you size it correctly.
I have one in a three family house with six full time residents and it is working great. Cut the gas bill in half.

@resident2 – how many gpm is your unit? It sounds like you do not have an auxilary hw tank? We had to install a dedicated dhw return line because the wait just one floor up got to be ridiculous. Everything seems good now, though we haven’t yet run the dishwasher, washing machine, and two showers all at the same time.
