Moving meters

Has anyone moved their gas and/or water meters outside? We have some space issues and putting these outside would be helpful. At first I assumed it wasn’t allowed but reading more it sounds like it may be. I assume I can work with a water main company for the permitting for the water one but I’m less clear on whether National Grid will assist with moving meters.

There is a HUGE legal battle going on right now about this, so I would wait to see what the final verdict is because as it is now, it would be a complex process to do this since you would need an LAA. If the city approves their new move though, the Utility Company can do it without pulling an LAA and therefore city inspections.

Has con ed replaced your street’s gas main in recent era? If not you might ask them if they have this scheduled for doing in near future. My experience is they have so much homeowner access difficulty that when a homeowner shows up trying to be helpful with coordinating access with homeowners on the block then they can also be unusually helpful about connecting you to the people who could help move things forward with your own property with less headache than you might experience otherwise. You would also work with your own plumber to pull permit for this work
