Good communication. Come when they say they are going to come. Know what they’re doing. Pricing remains the same as the quote, unless unforeseen conditions arise – doesn’t game with change orders. Work is fully completed – no dangling punch lists. Good site management practices.

Almost always ask for a recommendation from a trusted friend, and ideally someone who has an ongoing relationship the trade would keep in mind when doing work. What Leeb said communication in all forms is what it comes down to, before, during and after. I prefer a bit of formality–an actual estimate/contract with scope of work and guarantee, dates etc. Quick responses. In my limited experience a lot of trades seem to be unhappy using technology and may prefer a phone call and conversation versus email/text and that can lead to miscommunication. Or they only text and won’t answer a call. So being accountable and reachable is a big thing.

I agree with all the above. I’d add that I really value a professional who can, and maybe even enjoys, explaining the problem, solution, materials and methods used, how I can best care for my product/system, etc.

Should give a rationale for your repair. I have worked with a lot of different people providing technical help with renovations. How much information and alternatives depends on the people. Many time too much choice or information will fall flat, though with your toilet example the “why” might help with explaining your alternative.

Attention to detail: Don’t leave more problems for me than you solved – coming to fix a plumbing issue but (as Cate notes) leaving behind gashes in the floor, stains on the walls and all your trash behind. Communication: Things happen in the city – a problem at another job means you will be running 2 hours late? Just text or call. Also listening and not presuming that a homeowner has no idea what is going on because you have made gender-related assumptions.
