I’m hoping to find moldings to match my existing – any good sources other than Dykes, Lowes and Home Depot?

I don’t have a particular source for you, but it is possible to have a machine shop make a blade that is the exact profile of your molding and then a lumber yard, such as dykes, can cut wood to spec based on your needs. Here’s a TOH video on the subject: https://www.thisoldhouse.com/how-to/how-to-replicate-molding-profiles

absolutely! We have a landmarked house in Ridgewood and we did a gut renovation, needing to replace about 1000 linear feet of decorative molding. We brought a sample to Adriatic Wood on Pitkin Ave in Brooklyn (huge milling place) and they matched the existing molding perfectly, both in type of wood and design….and was cheaper than Home Depot

Decorator’s Supply Corporation in Chicago offers a very wide range of mouldings and other interior architectural details in both plaster and wood.

Great suggestion on Adriatic Wood – took a run out there this morning, and wow – what an amazing place. EJR – as much as I would LOVE to go down that rabbit hole, I just don’t think the scale that I’m dealing with would justify it.

With a good eye, you can match some pretty sophisticated older molding styles by layering several pieces of prosaic modern mill product from HD or Dykes. thankfully, our GC had such an eye because I could never have seen how to do it.

Adriatic made perfect replicas of our spindles so we could replace the broken ones. Just brought an existing one down there and they did in a couple days, for $48 each. Was awesome 🙂

Adriatic to match your molding (door and window casings, for example), but for spindles you can get them made to match your originals cheaper at JMP Wood (as they specialize in building staircases)
