Hi all – this is regarding installing new light fixtures in a home with old gas piping that is confirmed “dead”. Ideally I would like to keep the pipes as-is, I know they are useful to support fixtures and I don’t want to do a huge project, really just change the fixtures.

My question is – can modern chandelier or pendant fixture be easily adapted (by a lighting store or someone else) to use the deeper “gas canopies”? The modern fixtures with a puck-like shape at the ceiling will obviously not allow for the 2ish inches of pipe that protrude from the ceiling.

Any guidance on this would be so appreciated – I have searched these archives and the internet, I promise!

You can use a vintage or reproduction deep bell-shaped canopy with most any hanging fixture. You can also use one or more extension collars with a shallow or flat canopy [they can be stacked] but they don’t look as good as a bell-shaped canopy. A good hardware store [like Leopoldi’s, in Park Slope] will have the proper “hickey” to attach your fixture to the ceiling box using a deep canopy.

Here’s what an extension collar looks like:

and here’s one source for bell-shaped canopies:

Thanks bob! Yes, I would prefer to use the bell shaped canopy. But if using that on the fixture I’ve shown below as an example, wouldn’t the disc need to be removed and replaced with the bell? Trying to understand if this is a realistic plan before purchasing and tampering with fixtures….. You’re right that you’d have to remove the modern flat canopy to substitute a bell shaped one. That should be fairly easy IF the rod is threaded into the canopy, or merely passes through it. However my own experience is mostly with vintage fixtures, so I’m not sure that it would be easy. Old American-made light fixtures are pretty modular and interchanging parts is easy.

You could always put one or more extension collars under the flat canopy. I’ve done that with the two ceiling fans I have hanging from gas pipes. The collars don’t look bad painted the same color as the ceiling.

It might be easier to use bell-shaped canopies with fixtures that hang from a chain, rather than a rod.

Can you look at one of those West Elm fixtures in a store, or could you easily return one if it doesn’t work?

A possible idea–Rejuvination is a company that used to make antique reproductions. Their fixtures are all modern now, but they might be able to fit one of their chandeliers with a canopy that would hang from a gas pipe.
