I’ve had Mitsu Hyper Heats installed for about 10 years… They pump good heat on MODERATE temp days, say, above 20 degrees, but must be supplemented when the temp reaches below 10-20 degrees.
I use electric heaters to supplement the substantial (but inefficient) heat on very cold days.
I’m thinking about adding another heat pump to heat another 1,000 sq/ft on another floor… but I’m beginning to think the premium payed for Mitsu units is NOT worth it.
Anyone have luck with OTHER BRANDS for VERY cold weather?
Thnx.

Also-
I hear there are some sort of new Gov rules for NEW gas furnace and heating installations….?
Can anyone summarize?
Thnx.

I have a 10 year old Mitsubishi City Multi. I don’t have issues reaching the set point, just with the resulting energy bill. At extremely low temps they are defrosting frequently which results in cold air blowing and an exorbitant electrical bill.
So on very cold days I supplement with electric oil filled radiators for comfort.
I am looking to replace my whole system which is a pain because I have concealed ducted units. The goal is to replace the single 8 ton condenser with 4 smaller units.
Generally speaking, if you have gas in the house and a boiler, you could find a workaround by replacing the existing water-boiler with an efficient condensing boiler with storage tank.
You can then pick a combi condensing boiler (google Bosch condensing combi) with 2 water circuits. After sign-off of the water boiler you can use the second circuit and install some hydronic heaters (google Buderus hydronic).

These are the exact reasons that I tell clients not to eliminate their conventional gas fired heating systems when installing mini splits as a heat source… keep your conventional heat in place as backup
