Mirrors
To cate’s point, if you glue it with construction adhesive (the frame or glass) and go to remove it later from rock or plaster, you will pull the paper or plaster off. If i though i might have to remove the mirror later, this is what i would do: use the adhesive and do not press this too close to the wall and flatten the adhesive out. Leave the glass or frame 1/16″ off the wall. Then to remove it later cut the adhesive with a multi tool type plunge saw or even a hand held hacksaw blade. You might have to break the mirror if you cannot reach the adhesive with the blade. Once the mirror is off, the adhesive can be ground and sanded off with heavy paper. It will clog the paper.

Where can I find a good, distortion free large glass mirror for a dressing room ? It will be part of a built-in closet.

Do you wish it framed or unframed and if unframed do you have a plan to mount it?

Dork stole my suggestion. Order it through a glass shop and ask them to put a chamfered edge on it, especially if you will be handling it and leaving it unframed.

Thank you all for your responses.
Jeremy, thank you but what we had in mind was to get a piece of mirror to fill in a section of wall between two closet doors. The room is a kind of Victorian style pass-through adjacent to a bedroom .
We are asking is anyone in Brooklyn knew of a good place to buy the mirror. It will be permanently attached to the wall, framed with something like casing type moldings.
I was also wondering if it needs a backing like some sort of board, film or other material?

No backing. Depending upon how big it is get a heavy weight thicker one. You dont have to frame it with anything or can. If you frame, mount the frame to the wall. BUT, if you do not frame, you can mount the mirror to the wall with mirror adhesive. It comes in tubes, like caulk. In caulk aisle at hd.
Again, if you will be handling it, have a chamfer put on the edge and have them treat the edge. I handle untreated edge glass; it cuts the palms of your hands. If you carry a big long piece of glass, you must turn it on edge to carry it. Slide it into vehicle up on edge, not flat.
There used to be a glass shop on 5th by bergan. They had everything. But they no longer have a store front. They are still in business. Might be 5th ave glass.
There is a place called major glass on like church off of coney island or ocean pkwy.
I use major lock and glass for all of my door glass. They are on fresh pond in ridgewood.

There are glass shops in Brooklyn that have been in business many years, and they will install this for you. We did it (frameless). We specifically requested it NOT be glued to the wall, since we have plaster. It is attached with those little Deco looking things that go around the edge and are screwed into the walls. I don’t know what they’re called. Google glass, window, screen etc. Brooklyn and you should find some. These glazier shops also repair window glass and screens.

When you have the frame made, you rabbet the back of it out to receive the glass – so 1/8″ deeper than the glass. Make the rabbet1/2″ wide and fit the glass to it less 1/16″ all the way around. You can use silicone to hold it in. Professional glass people will tell you not to use silicone but in this case, the silicone will hold the glass in and help hold the frame together if the frame is too light to really support the glass.
I have put glass in cabinet doors this way and remade a mirror frame for exactly what you are doing about 6 years ago. The mirror frame was some off the shelf big box store thing and was not strong enough to hold the glass. It fell apart at the joints. When i put it back together, i did what i said above relying on the strength of the glass and silicone to hold the unit together.
Don’t use silicone like this on exterior windows. All you will do is create problems.

There is a sign for sam the glazier down around myrtle between like bushwick and ridgewood. I’ve wondered if sam is even sam anymore and if they have a store front.
