Mini-split unit on roof

I would like to place a mini-split unit on a flat roof. Planned to mount it on the parapet wall but an architect said since it was a small unit (~120 lbs), the DOB would be fine if its placed directly on the roof on top of a ‘concrete board’. The roof joists are wood. What is a concrete board and are there any drawback to placing it on the roof like this?

The external units are almost dead silent now. You can’t hear them running when standing next to them.
But they have to be a certain distance from lot lines

You can also put them in the backyard but it will be noisy at times. Booisgolden is right that they can hung on the parapet or chimney or on steel dunnage.

We’re getting quotes for mini splits now and we were told “no way no how” should we put the condensing unit directly on the roof — you can mount to parapet, suspend on a beam across, but not directly on.

It’s not just DOB who you’d be in trouble with too, its FDNY — so whatever the exact code is (our units will be over 120 lb so it wasn’t discussed) make sure you’ve got that part nailed. Don’t want to screw around when FDNY involved.

don’t know about the rules or how the installation would happen but be aware that you will lose access to the roofing material where the unit sits and could potentially void the roof warranty (if it’s still under warranty).
