How many exchangers would be need on an open 900 sq.ft. area on the parlor floor area of a brownstone? Does one 24,000 Btu unit work in that situation? What are the names of contractors that did a satisfactory installation for you? What would be a reasonable estimate for doing this job using top of the line units?

You only need one evaporator on the wall for a parlor floor. 24K btu is perfect. We had one 24K btu evaporator on the parlor and two evaporators for two upstairs bedrooms 9K btu’s for each room. One exterior compressor worked perfectly. The cost was approx. $12K for the whole thing. Don’t remember size of compressor or installer.

24k sounds excessive, you might be looking at half that as sufficient. On a parlor floor of a midblock townhouse the only heat gain would be through the front and back walls, a little bit from lighting. If the front and back walls are properly insulated and the windows are sound, you are not talking a great deal of heat entering the apartment.

The 24,000 BTUs amount comes from one of those sites that does that type of calculation based on the criteria you input for cooling that sized space.
