First thing to figure out is, how much do the units cost, and how much is the guy charging over that? He will need to pay for misc materials, labor, and some profit for himself. You say four units, is that four heads? How many outdoor units? Does that include an electrician to wire everything up? The best brands are daikin, mitsubishi, and fujitsu, in that order, but all of those are probably fine. It may depend on what flexibility you need. If mitsubishi makes a unit that fits in your space, but fujitsu doesn’t, that may impact your choice. If you want 4 machines on one outdoor unit, depending on the type of indoor units, different brands have different options.

If thee quote seems too cheap, they may be using off brand units. It’s up to you if that’s what you want. Check what kind of warranty you get. Off brand units probably will less reliable and may cost your more if they need repairs. Also parts may be hard to source. But if you buy mitsubishi etc, what kind of warranty do you get if your installer isn’t an authorized installer? You can also get Mr. Cool units at home depot and install them yourself if you want cheap units installed for cheap.

For a decent system installed, a rule of thumb is take the equipment cost(all these unit are available and priced online) and double it. Obviously there’s some other factors to consider there, but that’s a starting point.

Hello all- I am so confused with this process and don’t know where to begin. I got a quote from my contractor for 4 units for only 8k. This price is great. My friend had ACs installed by him and I understand she was the first house he installed in. Is this a straightforward process, or is this something I need somebody with years experience in? What can go wrong, what do I need to look for? Any tips on the best brand, best Brooklyn installers, and average price for the installation of the four units? (I am paying seperately for the electrical to be run.) I also wonder about the annual service, is this a thing? Am I about to add something in my home that is just going to be a massive headache? HVAC is unregulated in NYC so you cannot verify credentials, but I would definitely ask for references (outside the one you have). Ask them all the questions you have and see how their experience was; usually indicative of how yours will go.

We got mini splits a few years ago and it was one of the better decisions we made on this house. We paid a bit more than you were quoted. Used a compay called Weston in Queens. I would recommend them. They weren’t the cheapest but I felt like they were the most knowledgeable and the guy really worked with me on where to best situate the units, etc.
