Cool interested to see how that works out.

Where does one go to get help match crown molding from a picture? I don’t have a profile unfortunately. Adriatic would need an exact drawing and the Dykes catalog shows profiles. I am struggling to reconcile the view from the front to the sectional profiles shown in the catalog. I am not sure why they don’t show both views. I guess I could go to Dykes and try to visually match or is there some company that can look at a photo and be able to make something similar.

Maybe if you post the the photo someone would recognize it. I’ve tracked down a few and it was a pain.

Posting photo but it seems like it’s going to be hard to tell from this photo. I can already tell this process is going to be painful as I have gotten nowhere in weeks. [Ceiling](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:6dy8:ceiling.png.jpg)

The area is about 3′ wide by 6′ and thank you in advance. I may go to dykes and try to pick the closest from the samples. Resigning myself to that now.

in my limited understanding most moldings are actually compound rather than just one piece but i’m not sure how you would ever be able to do it from a photo. hence my suggestion to get the profile tool from lowes…

Thanks Maggie I have a gauge and have been using it on molding that is intact in places. Also those profile gauges are a &#(@! to use on the ceiling. Most moldings are compound especially where crown meets panel for example. Sorry if I was not clear – this molding got removed by contractor in a hurry and I wasn’t consulted. I am trying to match it from the photo. I’m not about to ask him to do it as I can just imagine how that will go down. I told him never to do that again.

ah, gotcha, i didn’t understand that the entire molding was actually GONE. sorry i couldn’t be helpful! is there anywhere else in the house with intact molding that’s even close? at least as a starting point?

Janedrew, the photo is disorienting, are we looking through a doorway? The crown moulding in that room sure looks like plaster, is that the one you’re trying to replace or is it the wood moulding in the foreground?

I agree with you and wasn’t sure the photo was going to help that much. It’s at the entry way. Yes the crown moulding was plaster and that’s the one I am trying to replace.

If you’re replacing the ENTIRE molding you could simply pick something you like that looks tone in the spirit of what you see in the photo

Hi Bob, thanks! That was my thinking as well since I have no original plaster sample. Unless someone with a good eye and knows their molding can identify it with a number.

Is this a match? If not it’s very close. Is your building an italianate from at 1860 to 1880 or so? I had this come up, but I had time to make a knife mould and run about 20 feet in gypsum on site. I can see if the knife is still around if you’re interested, but it wasn’t hard to make it. If it’s not close enough, I might know someone who can help you. Thank you so much! My jaw dropped, you are good. It’s super close. Re building exactly right. Second Empire, Italianate. I took some other pictures of the hallway molding because I had forgotten that will be similar at least for sizing some of the elements. Maggie reminded me to go look at that again (thank you).

Yes 🙂 and that works when there is something existing. In my case the only thing I have is a photo. I also have a baseboard that I need identified. I think I can do that at Dykes unless someone wants another mystery to solve.

Second empire, same period, makes sense the mouldings would be close. First, I’d your pics to Alex at ionic castings. This guy seems like he could have held his own in 1870, when it comes to plasterwork, the real deal. He has a book of hand drawn profiles made by his dad who ran the business before him, and his shop is amazing to see. It’s worth the trip even if he can’t match it, but I’d say there’s a decent shot he can make you something you’d like.

What’s going on with those ac/mc cables running through your vestibule? That’s gonna give you a problem if you have an electrical permit.
