Matching Crown Moulding

Where does one go to get help match crown molding from a picture? I don’t have a profile unfortunately. Adriatic would need an exact drawing and the Dykes catalog shows profiles. I am struggling to reconcile the view from the front to the sectional profiles shown in the catalog. I am not sure why they don’t show both views. I guess I could go to Dykes and try to visually match or is there some company that can look at a photo and be able to make something similar.

in something like this, the paint will burn on the stairs. that is why our plan in this house had nothing to do with the stairs (keep in mind, the stairs in these smaller houses open into the living rooms; i would like to think an entry hall would afford protection).

I would never count on running down the stairs in one of these houses on fire, if the fire is on the first floor. Now, consider this, if you have a brownstone with pocket doors and had a smoke detector in each isolated room, closing the doors might afford needed minutes to get out. But in an open room, if the couch were ablaze, i would not grab a child and run down the stairs. Maybe alone.
The smoke upstairs at that point would be too frightening. Poly or no poly, this happens fast.

I will admit I was thinking exactly what cate was thinking with regards to exits, hallways and fire. Though I was reading the product descriptions on the flex molding site last night…. they have a fire retardant version. I’ll wait and see what the plaster costs.

i took a fire safety class once as part of my building management training. it was taught by a retired NYC Fire Chief. he showed us a video of a room, the size of any sort of living room, lower ceiling than brownstones, with painted walls and a single upolstered chair in the middle. the kind with soft cushions and and a lot of fabric. they lit the chair on fire, no accelerant, and ran a stop watch on the video. i cannot recall the exact time, but within like 45 or 60 seconds that entire room was on fire with the paint burning on the walls (an inferno). i imagine at that point the smoke is no longer the issue but the heat will sear someone’s lungs. that is why i say the poly molding will not matter. at that point, in a row house like this, the only way out is through an upstairs window. the wax or poly – water base or oil – on the banister will ignite and travel right up the stairs in a flash. as the rooms get hotter, things ignite faster. and keep in mind, i watched this happen right before my eyes when i was 8, so i know (i was lucky i had a goo d sphincter muscle).

this is what i told my son when he was 2 or 3. if the smoke alarms go off he is to stay in his room (which has a window to a low roof on the front) and we will come to him. in no way was he to go down the stairs. the plan was to go out on the little roof and bang on the neighbor’s window or jump.

anyone who has kids or has a shop in a basement (or even a dryer) needs a heat detector over the dryer and at the top of the basement stairs and in the kitchen and smokes outside each bedroom. we have 3 working smoke detectors within 15 feet of where i am sitting right now. i did that not for me and my wife but for our son. if we lived alone we would have half as many detectors.

These old houses, especially the wood ones, seem to go up in a flash. I wouldn’t minimize the need for precautions. You don’t want the stairwell and entries blocked if you can help it. If you don’t have to put anything flammable/chemical/plastic in the stair, entry, and air shaft areas, best not to.

urbandad, i was on a train coming back to the city one day say twenty years ago. i had my bike (i used to be a long distance rider) and some guys came on with a friend in a wheel chair and they needed the space the bike was in for the chair so they began to lift it to hang it from the luggage rack with some cords they had. i got up to assist as it was a nice bike. one of them said “we better let him do it” and the other said “nah, he’s probably from the city and doesn’t know how to do anything”. coming from suffolk county and living in the city, i knew exactly what they meant. people in here, you for instance, and i can tell this about you, did not grow up doing the same things: building tree forts, ice fishing, working on go carts, building under ground forts, building boats (i never built a boat but others did and i watched a professional build one) and watching nasty developers come in and plow the woods under and build houses (which is where we got the wood for our forts). the shop teacher in the high school lived a hundred yards behind where i did and had a full shop in an old barn on his property and worked in it every night and enjoyed showing his own talent off. all this lent to something . the fire i mention above, that was the first time i got to see someone called an “insurance adjuster”. and guess what, by the time i moved to NYC i knew how to work a thermostat.

Thanks Steve. Given how much experience you have, it’s hard to believe garages even existed when you were eight! Sorry I couldn’t resist. Gypsum mouldings usually run to order, so it’s not a major discount for stock vs a similar custom profile. But this is why I’m saying show the picture to Alex, he may have something really good for you. And he won’t rip you off. And hit the Brazilian place up the block if it’s open.. The decocraft profiles don’t really look right in victorians.

Storytime. I called one of the plaster shops recommended on brownstoner. I asked them to price to run 100 feet of a profile I had. The guy had a UK accent of some sort and tried to intimidate me. He was all like “we’re a professional restoration company, we don’t help people who care about prices. Call us back when you’re serious.” But he didn’t know the difference between gypsum and lime. I hung up the phone, crossed them off the list and went on to the next company who instead knew h ow to make mouldings and what it should cost. At the end I just ran the mouldings on site for reasons I won’t get into, but I have some bigger mouldings I want to make soon and I hope to use Alex.

Thank you all. I admit I am being overly paranoid about fire. I just needed you to talk me out of it. Good tip urbandad, thank you. The budget should be ok . I don’t want to spend 5k on one hallway but if it doesn’t run $100 a LF should be fine.

urbandad, it is so impossible to get close with stock anything, not on something that big as there are too many other factors in it, not a simple cove or ogee (i have never looked for plaster moldings though). we usually have to use wood and altar it from there.

jane, i have been in two buildings that have been on fire – once when i was 8 i spilled a gallon of gasoline on our garage floor as i cleaned something and as soon as the gas spread, it ignited. literally right where i was standing (the fire surrounded my foot). and in 1995 i was in a building on 57th st that had a fire in the elevator mechanical room right above where i was stationed as part of the building’s fire team as the fire dept put the fire out. here is my take on a fire in a building: if you are trapped, you are in trouble anyway. if you can get out and get out fast (which you have to do anyway) the smoke inhalation is nothing – a one time exposure is not going to give us cancer (right, i am not a doctor, but i am exposed to all sorts of stuff everyday and am still walking). if you become incapacitated by smoke in a fire, it will be by any smoke, from furniture to paint to wood or chemicals and once you are incapacitated by that smoke, you have other concerns beyond exposure. what are the memory foam mattresses made out of in houses? or the plas tic on the printer in front of me? or the urethane floor finish my feet are sitting on right now? everything is plastic these days.

my real point is, once the fire has spread to the point that we are worried about the burning plastic, we had better be out of the house anyway. and to that end, i have excess smoke detectors on the top floor, where we sleep, and heat detectors in the basement including one at the top of the basement stairs.

I mean unless your budget is really tight a plaster moulding, particularly a stock one shouldn’t kill you. Installation is probably a bit more difficult, but it seems like your contractor knows how to do this.

One interesting thing to look at is sometimes the profile on the smaller moulding is repeated as a portion of the bigger mouldings elsewhere. You might get lucky if that’s the case.

I wouldn’t worry about that myself, unless I were using a LOT of polyurethane, but what do I know? You certainly would need far more than the 10’ of 1” molding I used. If you’re uncomfortable you should go with real plaster (or wood).
