Marmoleum Removal
You need to remove the Marmoleum first. Tile needs a rock-solid substrate so it won’t crack.

I have a Marmoleum(linoleum) floor in my kitchen that is 10 years old. I want to replace it with ceramic tile. Can I tile right over this stuff with some sort of surface preparation, or do I have to remove the Marmoleum first? The substrate is gypsum cement with embedded radiant heat tubes.
If removal is necessary, how should I proceed? The Marmoleum was put down with full coverage adhesive.
Thanks in advance, John.
