Main sewer line location

I see a large cast iron pipe that goes from the back to front along the wall (about half the length of the house) but then disappears behind a wall/room and assuming it goes under the ground at that point because it doesn’t continue after the wall/room open up. Would the pipe continue going under ground till it hits the street or would it come back up and then go out to the street? How far down in the ground are these main lines normally?

OP, the sewer pipe should gently slope down, and there should be a trap just before the sewer pipe exits the house. The pipe then continues underground until it connects to the city sewer, typically past the sidewalk and under the road. The correct slope is important to the proper functioning of the pipe, and is something that licensed, experienced plumbers make sure happens when they install the pipe. As to the location and accessibility of the pipe in a Brooklyn townhouse, it varies according to the age and style of the home. If you have a late 19th century townhouse with a fully underground cellar, typically the entire length of pipe is exposed and accessible in the cellar. For homes constructed circa 1900 and later with an English basement, the pipe is often underground. (As for early 19th century townhouses, AFAIK typically they lacked full cellars and had little if any plumbing originally.)

i just googled what can happen if part of a sewer line were lower than the rest of it. It is addressed as a naturally occurring problem when part of the line drops on the way to the street. It is referred to as a pipe “belly” and it will lead to problems (we had a backwards slant in a building once and had to have it snaked often). so it seems they would never knowingly install a line that goes down and comes back up in its path.

I THINK that if it went down and came back up it might behave like a trap and trap solids – or at least be prone to clogging in that section. So it would have to run straight.

I am not sure there is “normally”. Below the 48″ frost line yes. In your case i would work off the idea that it continues out to the road connection at same angle as what you see in house.

I am not a plumber. I have no formal training in plumbing. What i have stated above is from observations i have made and from the fact that i just had a clogged house trap in my own house.
