Loud noises from

Talk to Gennady of Absolute Mechanical Co Inc – he literally just helped us figure it out this week (after 5 years of crazy loud banging that was making us insane). We had people tell us it was everything from the size of the pipes to residue in the system…so far he was the only one who actually knew what he was talking about.

We just fully Gut renovated our row house. there are banging noises when we turn the heating system on ( boiler baseboard heating ). The systems been bled twice and the plumber says that should solve the problem. It hasn’t. And thanks to climate change we are likely going to turn our boiler off soon. Not sure what to do since this will likely become an issue in the winter.

the plumber insists that there is going to be noise – which I concede – but it shouldn’t sound like I’m living in my parents house built in the 1950s. He says all the banging is normal – that it sounds like his house built in the 70s. Our house was built three months ago.

We’ve come a long way since then, right?
What is the appropriate noise level?

Heating system must be noise free. Banging in heating system is a sign of a problem.

We also have a brand new hot-water system (baseboards and some radiators). When it came on during the winter we did hear the faintest “clicking” kind of noise, but it was literally about the same volume as when the thermostat came on. Almost completely unnoticeable. We do not hear any banging- if you’ve bled the lines already and the problem is returning, it sounds like there is maybe a leak allowing air in somewhere? I would push the issue, that kind of thing is going to bother you forever!

It’s unacceptable. Yes, maybe a slick click noise in some spots due to expansion as the heat comes on as Carmen says. Air in the sysytem usually causes the banging.

possibly an undersized expansion tank or poorly configured heating setup.. There should be no banging in a hot water system as gennedy said. You can contact me at errol832000@hotmail.com to take a look

Most plumbers shouldn’t touch heat. How the two, plumbing and heating, got so intertwined in the first place is beyond me. They’re two totally different systems requiring unique skill sets and different tools.
The plumber telling you the noise is normal has reached his limits. Please move on to solve your problem.
