Hi, I’m looking for advice on limestone cleaning/restoration. I’ve gotten a few quotes and a few have been astronomical. I just undertaken a huge renovation and I’m trying to make my budget include exterior work. Can anyone give me some insight into actual realistic costs for cleaning up the exterior of my 4 story townhouse including repairing the front stoop if possible? I welcome any contractor recos as well!
Thanks!!!

I think this is going to depend largely on what you mean by “cleaning up” and what the current condition of the limestone is. Was the limestone painted? Is it in good condition (detail intact, stone not dusty or crumbly when rubbed)? Are mortar joints intact? Is there evidence of water infiltration?
I don’t have specific firms to recommend but if you are in a renovation I would suggest asking your architect to help you focus the exterior work on the things that potentially impact the interior first if you’re having trouble getting the work on budget. It’s also possible that the numbers you’re getting are a response to unknown conditions or details. The better access you can provide to bidders the more accurate bids you’ll get but short of conducting physical probes into the underlying structure of your stoop there is still likely to be significant amount of guess work pushing the price up.
Whether the bids are consistently high or inconsistent overall you may need to give bidders more access or information about what you need and want. Also – it doesn’t hurt to speak to the bidders and ask them to explain the numbers they’re coming up with to you.

we had gotten a quote from Grenadier once, a couple of decades back, and i seem to recall thinking it was expensive.
