Last post in the chain on knocking down walls

@Murri67’s final suggestion in that chain is not just “sneaky.” It is criminal and dangerous. Calling 911 to falsely report a fire is illegal in New York (and probably in most places). It is a waste of resources that could be used to actually save lives. Fire trucks speeding to a false emergency are dangerous (a risk that is worth taking if there is a real fire, but not in this case). In addition, fire fighters could well break down a door if they knock and get no answer, destroying a neighbor’s property.

I realize that that thread is closed, and hope that this does not reopen it, but Brownstoner should not let a direct suggestion of illegal and dangerous activity to be the last word.

You’ve received some wonderful and clear advice on the several threads that have been posted on this issue. We would like to close out these threads. To summarize:
*If you have a contentious relationship with your neighbor and can’t talk to them directly then look on the Department of Buildings website to see what permitted work they have filed.
*If you believe that they are doing work without permits that is impacting the safety of your property then call 311 and file a complaint with DOB.
*Make sure to take pictures of the condition of your property to document “before” and “after.”
*As many have pointed out, removal of the party wall would result in the structural instability of your neighbor’s house and it is unlikely that would be done. However, construction is noisy; it may very well feel like they are removing a wall when they aren’t.
*If the combination of a contentious relationship with your neighbor and the stress of construction noise is causing you extreme anxiety, this forum may not be the right place for assistance.

Ok, I’ll bite, I just can’t resist. If what you’re saying is that your neighbor has totally removed his walls, totally removed the party wall, leaving only your wall, which is presumably just sheet rock or plaster, then a) both your buildings are going to fall down like right now, and b) you could figure this out really easily by drilling a small hole in your wall. If you hit a brick, you’re wrong. If you drill through and you can see your neighbor on the other side of that hole, twirling his mustache and plotting, then, against all common sense, you may have a point.

I suspect that this is what has happened to the walls in his apartment opposite my apartment: he removed his sheet rock, removed the party wall, and attached something to my walls that can be pulled when its time to remove my walls, Then build new walls immediately after in my apartment – therefore increasing the width of his apartment. I think this because of all the banging and drilling over 6-7 weeks. However, I have very little damage to the baseboards of my walls – so can I prove this guy did what I think.

If your neighbor is actually trying to remove your party wall, you need to call the DOB. That is super, super serious (we had to do work on our party wall to stabilize it and trust me, the DOB does not mess around.) I can’t tell, however, if that’s what you’re actually talking about.

Folks – I was thinking of calling the DOB to inspect walls opposite my apartment. I sense that the neighbors sheet rock and out party wall is gone and he has clamps or something that is attached to my walls (devided in sections) so when they are ready they can just pull and take the walls down. The only problem I see would be getting the neighbor to answer the door for the inspector. My other option is to wait for it to happen, call the police and then sue. What would you do? Call the DOB or wait? Thanks.

Taking down a fence isn’t foul play if it’s on their property nor does re-bricking (whtever that actually means). And just why do you think they are going over the property line? Asking for a friend.

The dryer vent is suspect – going from steam in the front of the house to no steam and a super strong smell in front of my house – the vent needs air flow. Foul play to me is taking down a fence, while re-bricking your house, crossing over the party wall/property line would result in a call to the DOB.
