Landlords as Additional Insured on Renters Insurance Policy

Hi all,

A couple of years ago we required that our tenants have rental insurance and list us (landlords) as additional insured. There was a compelling article about the benefits of doing this in a mainstream news source (which I unfortunately can’t find now). A quick google search provides some pushback on this (and a lot of useless commercial links). Has the tide turned on this matter again? What approaches are you and other small-scale landlords in NYC taking on this topic these days?

We just require the tenants to list us as additional interest with their their renters insurance company, so we get notices regarding the policy status, effective dates, and if its cancelled.
Perhaps that’s what you want to do

Requiring residential tenants to add the landlord is very unusual, and I don’t see the benefit. Renters insurance is generally for the tenants possessions. Your homeowners policy covers your contents, liability, fire, etc
