Hi, my 4-floor, 6-unit early 20c building has very poor ventilation in the kitchen (located in the middle of the building). There is a central air shaft which provides some ventilation, but I’d like to improve the air quality in my apartment when I cook!
Is it technically possible and/or feasible to construct a duct that would extend upwards through the airshaft, and then duct my range hood into it? The goal being to have cooking odors vented up and out at the rooftop. I’d also be interested to see whether this could be a solution for all the residents of the building as well. Thanks all.

Hi Cate, yes other apartment windows as well as mine do open into the airshaft. It is about 8′ x 4′ . At the top is a skylight and a mesh screen to let air pass through. The building is 4 stories in height.

The shaft sounds big enough to possibly allow ducting. You might want to check with an expediter and an HVAC expert re what code says about venting stove hoods through a light well/air shaft. If you do, you should also ask them what other options you have for venting a stove hood, and at the same time ask about gas dryers and AC venting through the air shaft, since people might want to know. I can tell you from experience (with a plumbing stack) that if you do go ahead with it, the skylight will have to be replaced. For whatever reason, once we did that, it has leaked ever since , no matter what we do, so I guess that’s a risk. I have heard that unvented stove hoods with charcoal and a fan do work though I have no personal experience with it. (Where I am from, ovens — not stovetops — have to be vented — a much better system IMHO.)
