Kitchen chimney

Can you post a picture? Can you describe the type of kitchen and era of house, etc.? Typically the fireplaces in kitchens were used with stoves, and they may have been coal burning or gas, depending on the era.

I stripped the paint off my chimney in my kitchen, which I think was originally used for coal burning and discovered glazed brick. They range in color from white to light brown, some smooth, some crackled. Is the cracklings original? Why did they glaze the brick? How to clean it? Any thoughts would be helpful.
