Keys for tenants
You could consider a keypad-style smart lock like the Schlage Sense or Connect. It’s a top grade lock with a keypad and keyhole on the front. You can share codes with whomever you like or revoke them. It won’t prevent them from sharing their code with a friend but you can revoke a code if you find they are sharing and give a new one without having to rekey your lock.

The front door of my house is shared with my tenants with apartment entries inside. Do I have the right to approve who gets keys or can the tenants give keys to whoever they want?

I have a standard clause in my lease that tenants cannot give keys to anyone other than resident family members without the written consent of the landlord.
Security of the building is very important.

Why not install a Multi-Lock which can only be duplicated with a special code key card?
So you hold the card and only you can make duplicates. Anyone who wants or needs an extra key must come to you.

Those keys can be copied without a card.
It’s not realistic to control copies being made of keys or who gets a copy.

I give each tenant a key to all of the doors that acces their space or shared common areas. I will also give a key to anyone who has children 16 & over but they sign a clause holding them responsible if their child forgets to lock the door or anything happens. I also charge a hefty fee of $50 bucks per key for any replacement or additional keys requested (for their cleaning people, nannies, mom, etc. If it is a replacement key due to their keys being lost then I also have a clause saying they are fully responsible for the changeout to any doors to preserve the safety of all tenants in the building. I also note in my lease the number of keys given and the dates given. When they move out they have to return the same or their security deposit will be taken to change out locks.
A note on Multi-Locks… Their license to that card technology expired several years ago and now any locksmith who has the machine can pretty much make a dupe. The only exceptions are for those mega-residential buildings. That seems to be another level or license that you would need a card for.

People can get copies made of keys. You will never fully control that. The value of having lease terms governing who can have a key, consent required, etc., is that you want it to be a violation if they go beyond what you allow in the lease. Lease terms give you footing to impose a consequence (if you choose).

I remember my friend use to stay as tenant, she also had the same complain about key. So she asked the owner for a duplicate key and got one with instruction not to lend house key.

You should be very careful with the keys. Nowadays many are waiting for a chance to get into our house. So we should stay alerted. So don’t allow the tenants to lend the key to anyone else, unless you know them very well.

EricW4 that is why thorough vetting, background checks, large security deposit, guarantor if needed and an iron-clad lease with rider relating to the key situation will start out any landlord tenant relationship on firm footing. This way no tenant can say “I didn’t know I couldn’t dupe the keys or allow my college friend to crash here while I visited my parents.”
