Japanese knot weed
The roots will keep spreading from your neighbors back into your yard. This is the real problem with them. You need to dig a deep “foundation” around your property, I would say 12-18″ deep to get below the root level. To build a wall to keep them out. Once you have dug all of the roots out of your property, spray it with white commercial grade vinegar, cover the entire area with black tarpaulin for a few months – a year. Hopefully you can then landscape your garden without them reappearing, if they do, keep vigilantly digging them out.

I’m looking for the best way to get rid of Japanese knotweed without resorting to chemicals like Roundup. I’ve read that one needs to dig out the rhizomes and then treat with roundup – I’m okay with the physical aspect of doing the digging and pulling but I’m not into the chemical part. – is there a way to at least slow down the growth – in a more natural way?

If you just keep on digging and not let it grow it should be eventually starve of energy and die. Just a longer process.

In my non professional opinion, I would agree that it would starve at some point which would serve as a perm resolution.

Best option is to find the rhyzoid and inject chemical into it. It will kill itself and then you can remove. You would not be spraying chemical so exposure /impact is isolated to the knotweed itself
