I have seen some elegant black ones in Brooklyn Heights and have wondered if they are custom made to fit the sills and furnished by one of the landscape companies that works in the neighborhood — there is at least one firm that specializes in window boxes. We purchased some inexpensive plastic ones from Italy from Crest Hardware in Williamsburg we are happy with. They are unobtrusive, come in an array of colors, and have a built-in tray at the bottom so they don’t drip. Chelsea Garden Center (the Red Hook one) had a wide array of containers when I last visited. Probably the Williamsburg location does too but I haven’t noticed them.
