ISO radiator covers
Dear community,
Can you recommend any source for attractive radiator covers? This would be for medium sized, residential, old fashioned steam radiators (for a brownstone). Are there any important considerations to keep in mind? The main goal is heat and other relevant protection with children at home.
Thanks!

If you have conditions, you can try liquid cooling.

Any radiator cover will reduce the heat coming off the radiator somewhat – If you want the most heat possible to radiate, don’t use a radiator cover at all – just get your radiators painted to be as attractive as possible. Or use one of the sorts of covers that just cover the top, with nothing in front of the radiator. Or use a sort of console table that fits over the radiator, dressing up the radiator (the metal legged ones that look like iron do this well) also leaving the front completely open.
I don’t know what your definition of attractive is (I think the wood one, or mdf that looks like wood, are the only attractive kind), but the standard metal radiators you an buy (google them) come in standard sizes that may fit your radiators, and in my experience they radiate heat much better than wood ones do. That’s one reason I don’t like them (besides appearance, which I don’t like as much as the wood ones) – the metal covers can themselves be very hot to the touch. Here’s a local source for the standard metal ones in different styles. http://stanleyradiatorenclosure s.com/461378.html. Metal covers are usually cheaper than wood ones (as they are mass produced in standard sizes, not necessarily custom made to fit your radiators), and they are attractive enough to some, depending on the room they are in.

The wood should not touch the radiator; do not rest the wood on the radiator. It is fine. Use finish pine and then paint it. Similar in looks to the above noted : www.fichman.com

How does the wood frame interact with the heat? Is it a good conductor so the air flows out of it well or does it tend to contain heat? Can the wood get damaged by the heat? Thank you!

The best way is to get some custom made; a simple wood frame with wood moldings to hold sheets of perforated steel available from most Home Depot etc.
