ISO: marble mantle (slate ok too!)
Just to point out, most summer covers don’t seem to have the expandable wings, so your best bet might be to try to get a matching arch and cover. Or maybe someone else with way more mantel experience will have a better idea! Does your mantel currently have a cast iron arch? I think as long as you get the cover measurements pretty close, you should be fine. In the case of this summer cover, it actually rests behind the arch (which you should be able to see in the close up), so there’s a bit of (literal) wiggle-room.

Someone posted a marble mantel on here for sale (Neo-Grec I think) about a month ago and they may still have it. Was pretty reasonable, about $1200 I think. Search marble or mantel on here and maybe you’ll find it.

If you’re looking for someone to install an old salvaged mantel, I highly recommend John Malli, who was recommended to me by someone at Foro Marble. He did a near-miraculous job earlier this spring installing a 19th century Italianate marble mantel for me (which came from a brownstone in Hoboken, and which arrived in about 15 separate pieces). He sourced additional matching marble for two of the sides and did the whole thing for a very reasonable price. I was planning on posting about him in the forum here but selfishly wanted to wait until he finished installing a second mantel that I recently decided to put in! I believe he’s in Italy for another week or so (that’s right, he’s an honest-to-goodness actual Italian stonemason), but here’s his number: (347) 925 9016. Oh, and I’m attaching photos of the assembled mantel (and what it looked like before John worked his marble magic). Oh, and I should point out that I had the metal arch and summer cover blasted and powder-coasted (in a black satin finish) at Ever-Nu in Greenwood.

The whole room is beautiful and cute kitty. Just curious, how does one measure to make sure the cover fits. Do you make a template and take that when you ty to source it?

Thanks, Jane! I actually didn’t realize the cat was in the shot until right before I posted it, and then figured, “Eh, free cat photo.”
So, there are two cast iron pieces– the arch, and then the “summer cover” that fits inside the arch. I was lucky in this instance because the arch and cover came with the mantel, so I knew that they fit– at least at some point in time, before sitting in a yard in Hoboken for who knows how long. As for how the arch fits into the marble mantel itself, based on my rather limited experience/googling, there are usually around 3 to 5 smaller marble pieces that actually rest behind the two larger front pieces, which form a sort of “background arch,” and then cast iron arch is then affixed on top of that. (How, I have no idea– you’ll have to ask John Malli!) At least in this case, the summer cover just rests loosely inside that arch, since it was made to be removable.
I’m attaching a closeup photo so you can hopefully see what I’m talking about; there are some small seams where you’ll see the recessed arch, and then you’ll see the summer co ver resting inside the cast iron arch. You might notice a spot that’s still rusty; that’s because that this style of summer cover had two pieces on either side that could expand to fit whatever arch they’re fitting in; and the sandblasting place originally blasted and painted it when the wings weren’t expanded to the proper size. (I may get that fixed, but I actually don’t mind the small hint of imperfection/age that resulted.) The wings are very hard to expand– I ended up having to hit them on the inner edge with a hammer to get them to move past the rusted screws.
Anyway, the whole mantel restoration became something of a passion project for me!

You’re so kind to explain this, thank you. I am not sure the photo uploaded. Once I see the photo with your explanation above, I think I’ll fully comprehend it. Though even the explanation along gives me a good idea.
I have mantles but some are missing covers. I was contemplating getting covers somewhere down the line.

Ah, yeah, I forgot to attach the closeup photo! This still might not give the best picture, but I actually have a second summer cover in the cellar (which I’ll be using for the other mantel, which has yet to be reassembled and installed). I’ll look for it and take some better photos, although I’m not sure all of the arched summer covers operate this same way (with expandable “wings”). I think the other summer cover was actually cut down along the top to fit the other arch and mantel, so I suppose that was another way to “customize” the one-size-fits-some product in the 19th century… [MantelCU](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:w8zC:mantelcu.jpg.jpg)

It’s helpful and I understand it better now. Makes sense. Thanks again! The paint job looks great btw.
