I know this topic has been discussed at length. The corner of our cellar has obvious drainage issues. We are not sure what the source of the problem is, but it could be drainage or a crack in the pipe (there is a spout going into sewage pipe on the outside). Can you recommend an expert to deal specifically with this issue?

Our house use to get a lot of water in the cellar when it rained. George Haliotis (917-589-4208) waterproofed our cellar a few years ago and its been working out fine. Sometimes I get some seepage through the door but nothing a rag cant solve. We no longer have water coming in from the foundation walls.

First you need to determine the source of water, since waterproofing and plumbing are different trades. Get a hose up on the roof and put it into your drainpipe. Then wait and see if you get water in the basement. Then do the same thing with the yard. Run the hose for about a half hour and see if you get water in the basement, and where. If you can’t put a hose up the outside of the building yourself, a roofer could do this for you.

Does the ground slope away from the house? Is the neighbor’s downspout pouring additional water by your foundation? Does the mortar in the cellar need re-doing? These were some of the issues making our cellar damp and sometimes downright swampy. We improved the drainage of the back yard by installing French drains (which also took care of the additional water coming from the neighbor, since they haven’t fixed the problem). We also repointed the stone (chunks of the mortar was missing), and now our cellar is nice and dry.
