Steve, I do think someone should buy a 6 head machine and make up knives for the universal catalog and built up moulds from pre universal. There are many but not that many. Maybe I’ll do it one day, but it does seem easier to charge people for custom mouldings all the time. On the other hand, that results mcmansiomification of brownstones with stock mouldings.

Hello all, I need to replace some door/window casings in a house that’s over a 100 years old so the regular molding companies like Dykes or Adriatic do not have the molding profiles that I need. I’m hoping that if there is someone out there (maybe even a company) that does custom moldings, they might already have the knives? There are but seems like everyone is super busy. I ended up just getting mine made by a molding company. Then it’s easier to find someone to do the install. Santos who posts on this forum does it but he quoted me an extremely high price.

adriatic. you need someone with a molder to do something this large and even that, because of the back curve on the profile, cannot be done in one pass (if it were me, i would have adriatic cut the face and then i would use the router or shaper to cut the back curve with a large round over bit).

Adriatic had to do make the long piece in two separate profiles. But don’t do a drawing, they seem to really dislike that as will never be accurate. most of these places just prefer you send in an actual piece. So get a cheap hack saw and slice off a sample and take it to them.

@cate: i suspect dykes sends it out. i have never asked them to do a custom piece as i either went to Dimension which used to be off metropolitan ave or adriatic. but i have never got an inkling that dykes has this kind of equipment and that kind of shop someplace. dykes sends a lot of stuff out to various other suppliers i have been using for years.

you can walk into adriatic with the long piece of wood and they will slice a piece off in the mitre saw. i mean, maybe they don’t want an 8′ piece in their offices, but a 4′

adriatic is closing for two weeks beginning (i think) thursday.

@vard and anyone else who wishes to switch between dykes stock moldings and adriatic’s dykes profiles: the adriatic product is a tad heavier than the dykes product. so it may be the same profile and if you use dykes product around one window in a room and adriatic around the other, you will not notice. but when you go to mix them in a run, say to scarf a joint in a run of crown, the adriatic is a tad thicker and will not join with dykes perfectly. this has been my experience in any case i have had both moldings on a job. i now only buy from adriatic as a result. dykes only in an emergency if i am right there.

as for the other thing i mention, that is from laying them on the wall and have to sand the back off the adriatic product to make it sit flush with the dykes. its not called “eye” it is called a “headache”.

so as dork points out, it is picture molding. i would begin looking at all the available picture molding bearing in mind that the places like Le Noble, Dykes, and Adriactic will have the heaviest – and perhaps rosewieg in the bronx (i have never been there) and places like garden state will be the lightest. there are also out of state places to order from but i do not use them. in other regions, they source the molding from other regional sources. if op travels to ct or NJ, they would be wise to look at moldings in those places. when i lived in NC, all the molding was different from what we have here. so other regions may offer hope.

urbandad, here you are talking about things you know nothing about. the knife might be like 200 or a little more, and the machine set up adds like 300 to that. then the wood.

but look at the curve in the back of the profile. if you really knew anything about making this you would know that to make that, the knife can not reach around the back, so a second pass must be done with another blade.

the op is not getting out of this for less than 600 or 700 and if that is for say one window, that is a lot of money.

Actually it depends on the equipment they have. And yes there is usually a tool up charge, but why wouldn’t they charge that for a stock knife the same as custom? And why could a stock knife make that in one pass and custom knife require two?

what depends on what equipment they have and would you mind elaborating on the differences for us or are you again spewing stuff you can only guess about? their are three machines that i know of to make molding, in the modern sense, and i have two of them. there is a molder and a shaper and a router. no one i know uses the old molding planes, at least not anyone trying to make money.

Most of the places that do this commercially, use full size molders. small shops like mine have shapers and i have a molding head for my shaper and can have blades made by C G Schmidt in NJ and make smallish moldings in house. i hate using the shaper. and of course we all have routers and router tables.

if they had a stock knife, the material would be out on the shelf and op would have found it in poplar. thus if they wanted it in something else, they could have asked them to use a stock knife to cut what they want in say oak.

if you notice that with all of the modern stock moldings, the curving stops short of going all the way around the piece but stops short while on the old wood, it actually curves behind it. i am not sure what they used to make this molding in the 1880’s and 1890’s but by the time modern high speed machinery came along they stopped some of the “back curves”, the return on the outer edge of the wood. this is because the modern blades spin over the wood or from the front and cut the wood out and can not reach around anymore than the narrowest part of the front of the profile or they will tear the other wood out as they pass over it. to get around this, the modern knives do not reach around the back. if the OP tried to have a custom knife made to do this in one pass, it would not work, it would cut the curve off.
