iso carpenter or woodworker who specailizes in custom molding

Hello all, I need to replace some door/window casings in a house that’s over a 100 years old so the regular molding companies like Dykes or Adriatic do not have the molding profiles that I need. I’m hoping that if there is someone out there (maybe even a company) that does custom moldings, they might already have the knives? [20210626_154313](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:tgVc:20210626_154313.jpg.jpg) Thanks.

Steve, I do think someone should buy a 6 head machine and make up knives for the universal catalog and built up moulds from pre universal. There are many but not that many. Maybe I’ll do it one day, but it does seem easier to charge people for custom mouldings all the time. On the other hand, that results mcmansiomification of brownstones with stock mouldings.

OP, someone probably has that blade, they are just not on this site. and some of them may be long retired and out of circulation so guys like me can not introduce you and them. if you have called around and gotten no where, this might be an exercise in futility. I am not saying it is and i am the one who often says “it can be done. do your research, ask around”. but how much time will be spent trying to get it done? how many people might you have to drive to and how many woodworkers might you ask to look at that profile? what is the totality of the of the expended effort?

Be realistic about what this is worth to you. is it worth a lot of your time? if it is not, then it is probably not worth the time of the people who might try to help you.

i say this, because when i was first self employed, i ran around trying to build a customer base by trying to help all these people with unique or hard to do things. at some point, i realized i had to get paid for that time – not just the time making the item but the time doing the research and ordering bits an d wood, travel, etc. so i raised my prices. not to what it might take to go to a place like Adriatic for two custom knives, but enough so i can come out making, after all my time and expenses, something like what today would be like $30 an hour. as soon as i did that, all those people that i was trying to help disappeared (a little price increase and they no longer wanted to do the projects that they waited all their lives to get done). what that told me was what they were asking me to do was really not worth the time any of us were putting into it; they were happy so long as i was toiling at rates they would not toil at themselves. eventually i cultivated a new customer base with people who understand a little more about the skillset, what it takes to run a business and how much it might cost someone to set up a job.

if you are the kind of person who really appreciates the efforts of others (efforts that may not lead to compensation) and you think it is worth your time as much as it is the time of others, i will be working in my shop all day today in zip 11379. you are welcome to find my web page and contact me and bring that molding here and i will look at some of the blades i have and look at some catalogues (i can hold a profile up and look at the lines in a router bit catalog and have a pretty good idea if it will work). i am less hopeful than hopeful though – but if it is worth your time to drive over here, then it is worth mine to try to help you. (and op, i am not saying if i find a match you have to pay me to do this- i am only trying to help you decide if this can be done without going to adriatic or replacing the moldings).

also, have you tried calling someone like Nate at SWS? that guy must have a lot of shaper blades. not sure how he might feel about stopping what he is doing for something small.

can you hold a ruler up in front of the profile, standing up to show the depth of the cuts and retake photo? or can you make a scan on graph paper with 1/4″ grids on it and post it?

i have about 250 router bits. more router bits won’t help, the cuts might be too deep for a router and the entire profile is too wide – so it would have to be done in multiple passes and setting that up on a router can be tricky. if there was a bit that i thought could help, i could ask you to buy it and bring it along with the profile. router bits are cheap, in terms of what you are doing.

i also think one of the edges on your profile is a little rounder than most bits, though that can be done buy hand, the old fashioned way.

thanks for all the helpful posts here. Given how many historic houses/brownstones we have here in Brooklyn, I was hoping that there would be a carpenter or two who regularly makes custom moldings and has several/many knives already? Or, someone who really knows router bits like Stumpy Nubs? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYaU01gSBJE

Doorsby you’re right potentially. In this instance, I think people know who I am referring to. I’ll clarify that S was not referring to Doorsby.

If you read a definition of hustle, it doesn’t have any positive association. Also I have never seen you hustling.

Interesting. I talked to him too and yes he quoted a ridiculous price. His photos do not reveal a high skill level or finishing that would warrant a high price.

I know people on here have hired him to build casings, restore doors etc. I was mystified by it . Initially I wondered 1. who was hiring him 2. why 3. if that was really the going rate

My takeaway now is that there is a bit of hustle. He feels he can charge x amount and get away with it. People will pay because finding a good tradesperson is a process. S is always posting photos here with great enthusiasm. A casual forum reader may assume he’s the go to person for the community. I am sure CTG got away with that for a while too.

I am so glad you shared what I was thinking and Thank you. Urbandad has been great about sharing his experiences with trades.

I got fleeced once hiring the Santos of ‘plaster’ and it taught me a lesson.

(The easiest way is to get a contractor that makes their own mol ding but if you don’t find one then it’s a struggle unless you want to run around and get it made at an Adriatic which is a hassle)

I see the post come up over and over again. I think a lot depends on you, your architect and/or contractor. Some contractors will make make all your trim and do it well. Most others don’t do it or don’t know how. A homeowner will figure out how to cut a sample and go to Adriatic. OR go to Dykes and get the closest match. Some architects will spec the closest Dykes match.

The biggest piece of misinformation I see repeated over and over is to ‘get a profile gauge’ I got baited by that too and realized it’s 1. waste of time 2. inaccurate for complex moldings 3, you’ll waste an incredible amount of time trying to get it right. Adriatic will take your drawing but really they want you to cut a piece and bring it to them. (I have spent days with the profile gauge tracing every single molding in the house so I feel justified in saying that advice is crap.)

My contractor matched all my moldings. Upon examination they seemed close but were all slightly off. The Dykes moldings didn’t have weight that is common for a Victorian molding.

When I find a good finish carpenter w ho makes trim, I’ll post it here. There should be some kind of open source sharing of plaster and wood knives. Depending on the block, some houses may share identical or similar detailing.

But how often do people post about these types of casings, or end up with a dykes moulding because they don’t know how to do it right?

The last time OP posted regularly was in 2012. One of the posts was about custom moldings. Steve responded then as well but, of course, OP was long gone.

Meanwhile OP is drinking a cold beer on the beach having no idea we’re still finding detailed solutions

All I think about is how Steve could have made all the mouldings in the ane time and effort it takes for him to write all his detailed posts.

I know, I know. It’s always good to see you guys sharing all of the amazing info! I always feel if OP is not engaged, we can all search this forum and google things it gets a bit one sided. In this case OP asked question and received an answer and OP replied and said thanks. That’s actually amazing and the purpose of a forum.
