I have several fireplaces in my brownstone. We are planning to make one of them function again as a gas fireplace with a coal basket, as it is it shallow and was likely coal originally. However, the fireplace in the back of the garden level is deeper, and seems to me it was likely an original wood burning traditional fireplace. We would ideally like to install a wood burning stove (pot belly) or a wood burning stove insert into the space . HOWEVER,,,,, I cannot figure out though if that is legal and don’t know who to ask. Any advice?
I think our back up plan would be to make it work once again as a regular / tractional wood fireplace, but I also do not know if that is legal. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hopefully others will chime in but I believe existing fireplaces can be restored to working order. Just no new ones. Not sure how easy it is going to be though to get the permits for it. Were it my house I’d do it without them if it’s possible to have the work done on the chimney without it being seen and reported. On the gas coals one, I installed one from gascoals.net and loved it. As per advice from the most recommended fireplace restorer in Philadelphia, the flue was closed up. The gas burner emits virtually no CO as it burns hot (blue) and is about that of two burners on a range top being on. Yes, the directions are that it needs to be vented. It does not for occasioanl burning.
