Is 0.4 miles (10-15 min) walk to a train station too far?
looking at a property that is Is 0.4 miles from a train station is that too far to walk each day?

… and from the subway to work, and to lunch and stores from work, and the trip all over again to get back home again, going up and down the many subway stairs, and up and down the stairs if you live in a brownstone or walk-up, and to lunch and stores from work, and to all the stores and other places one goes in the neighborhood one lives in, and the other places one walks to rather than driving as people in other places do, and to the park just to walk there …. a much healthier lifestyle than anywhere but in a few other walkable cities in the country – and maybe some really tiny walkable villages out there.

people seem to agree that the walk is a health benefit. Prior to living in NYC, i lived on LI and in a small southern city. in both areas people relied on cars, too much i think. kind of had no choice in the matter. it showed though; a lot of heavy and obese people. when i got to the city i was surprised at how fit NYers are; it has to be that walk to the subway.

Why are you asking? Do you have a health condition? Is your walk safe? Is either subway station under repair? Do you have young but mobile kids who would need to make that walk? Is it all uphill? For most it’s a good walk especially if you can hit up a store and grab some coffee or walk with a significant other or friend but if there are other considerations that would make that walk seem like 4 miles then you should weigh them. Equal distance from the Q and 2/5? Sounds like my neighborhood. I’m OLD and neither line is too far for me.

You want to be at least 2 blocks minimum from a subway station – especially with this administration. 0.4mi sounds pretty decent. .

I live .3 miles from the subway and I would say the walk is not far at all. It’s about 5 minutes.

I’d pay more attention to your train options than just the distance. I would rather be half a mile from 2 good trains than a block from the C train.

Since clearly the answer is subjective, and you are asking for our opinion, I’ll say no, it isn’t too far, not at all. Not in NYC.
Only when I lived in another city did I see walks to the train of this length called “far” – by a bunch of suburban transplants who drove everywhere and never used their legs for walking.
To city people, in NYC or other cities, that is not considered far at all. And oddly, the same length walk through NYC seems shorter after four decades of walking in the city, and it isn’t because I”m in better shape now than when I first moved here (I’m certainly not) – it is because I appreciate so much the little time I have to walk outside now, compared to when I had much more time to do so on a daily basis.

Googlemaps says I am a half mile, 9 minute walk, from home to subway. Five street blocks and 1.5 avenue blocks. Seems quite a normal walk to me. I agree that the issue is subjective, but if it is too long for you, you might not be cut out for city living.

It also depends on your work hours. Do you need to be in the office early in the morning, like before 7am? And do you come home, like after 8pm? Because that 10 minute walk is going to seem a lot longer if you are trudging to the station in the morning darkness. Ditto at night. It will also be more isolated.
That said, the big factor is the property. If it’s pretty close to your ideal — if it meets all your needs and more and you feel excited about living there — well that may override the walk issue.

Google map says I am 8 minutes away from the nearest stop. In reality, it only takes me 5 minutes.

Average walking is a mile in 15 to 20 minutes even for the slow.

The only issues I’d think about are whether the walk is through a reasonably safe area–is it warehouses or abandoned areas where you might be uncomfortable at night?—or whether you live on a hill. The latter can mean an 8 min walk becomes 20 when returning home.

That looks like a pretty close walk from the station, 5-7 mins. Do you actually want to live 1-2 blocks from the station? My personal preference is not to live too close to the station. Living half a mile or more has it benefits, its more quiet, less foot traffic..not sure if that also correlate with crime.

.04 is a 8 minute walk, according to Google and unless you’re mobility impaired, shouldn’t be a problem.

The answer is completely subjective. FWIW I live a 10 minute walk from the subway and consider that quite close [and I’m OLD].
