Ironworker Needed for Exterior Stair Railing
Insurance company is requiring that we install a small railing next to some steps going down to the basement (exterior). Can anyone recommend an irnowrker for this job? Obviously it’s not a big job and we fear that companies mentioned in the past may not be willing to look at a job this minor. Thanks in advance.

If you have to go with an ironworker, we used Lopopolo with good results.

We just used Armijos Iron Works in Bushwick to do a new iron driveway gate. He was nice, very interested in making sure we were happy, and real world reasonably priced.

I had to install the same thing recently… needed custom railing since the top of stairs needed a post while the bottom was attached directly to the wall. The larger iron places either refused outright or had a very expensive minimum. Try checking for a place nearby, as they’ll be more likely to do it if its just down the street. Custom fence/gate places will often also do railing. Though, I’ve found iron shops will only do iron e.g. no stainless steel. and the metal gate places won’t work with iron. Stick to the smaller guys and you might find someone who will fab and come out to install for a reasonable price since its slow season right now and business is slower. Try to get it done before March as I was told they start to get much more busy then. Also consider how sturdy you want the railing installed to decide who you want to install it. ie. for the post will you be bolting it down, casting it in new concrete, or core drilling a hole in existing concrete.
I ended up taking exact measurements of all dimensions for the stairway (# of steps, height of wall, etc) and had a iron shop custom fab the railing for $10/ft primed and painted. I gave them pictures of a neighbor’s railing to show them the style I wanted and a picture of the location to be installed to confirm fit. I purchased a few anchor bolts from the shop, watched a how to video, and installed myself with a rotary hammer. Or my guess is you can probably find a local contactor to come out and install it for you on a off day for $200-$300 bucks, if you’re doing simple anchor bolts or a new concrete casting. Core drilling will likely require one of the custom shops/installers since most contractors won’t have a core drill.
If the railing needs be installed through brick/concrete, a handyman probably won’t have a hammer drill or preferably a rotary hammer to properly install.

I don’t think you need an iron worker. At best a handyman would do if you aren’t DIY inclined. There are railings and wall attachments you can get at home depot. A simple round railing attached to the brick side wall will do.

Our insurance company asked for this too and I screwed on a pressure treated 2×4 for a railing and they were fine with it.
It doesn’t look quite as beautiful but it cost $10 instead of $1000 to have an ironworker come out and it’s the basement, so doesn’t have to look pretty.
