Yes, the picture Wonderednow posted is what I meant – with the box on top. I did it in 2 rental apartments & it’s worked for 30 years.

My iron guy (retired now) created a ledge and 2 arms which he anchored into the exterior of the parlor floor upper window for a 24,000 BTU unit to cool the whole floor. She’s still going. I used Heights Ironworks on Third Avenue (around the corner from Dykes) but he retired last year.

I’ll let others explain how you do it, but before you begin, it may be a comparable work and cost to install a single zone DIY minisplit. May not be possible if you have nowhere to put the condenser, but it might be, and I think it has many advantages over this type of setup.

@michael – My guess is that @arkady is referring to something like this, except you would want the box to be on the top rather than the bottom: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/89/a0/54/89a054b2e4245002737ad2f25c6e67ca.jpg

not sure what you mean by “box incorporated into a window guard structure.” can you post a picture or link of one?

You can have an iron monger make an external support for it. A box is incorporated into a whole window guard structure. You may have to have electrical service moved since a/c cords are short & it’s a bad idea to use even a heavy-duty extension cord. You’ll also have to insulate around it.
