induction range

I am thinking of using an induction range rather than gas in the house we are renovating, but I have never used one. Does anyone have experience, for or against?

On the capacity issue I got an estimate for running electric that would allow an induction stove into my apartment kitchen. My existing electric would only allow for a ye olde coil top. The quote for the upgrade was $2,000. I found in my hunt that good but not necessarily top of the line induction models were much more expensive than a gas range. In asking around, people who did the switch weren’t reporting astronomically high electric bills to me, but I couldn’t get exact numbers.  But the general advice was get the best induction range that you can afford as it would be worth the investment. No one that I talked to regretted the switch from gas to electric when that electric was induction.

We have an ordinary rental grade electric stove in one unit and it has a dedicated line with 220 volt service.

It seems as if the direction things are going is, pay more for the induction stove and the electric dryer and maybe the heat pump, but save the planet. It’s like buying organic vegetables. Plus if you are a doing solar roof maybe the cost difference is negligible.

cate, that is what our gas bill runs. i think the electric will be a lot more. people complain when they switch to electric dryers.

chemosphere, read about these and the tops and look at the voltage for all of them and read what Ed says about the voltage and what i say about needing space in a box.

in truth, i cannot see any one of these working off 120. i cannot even get a fast electric teapot here because they are all 120 (europe they are 220) so i cannot imagine one of these working on 120. but who knows until we look.

My mom has one. She got it because gas was not an option. My gripe with her’s is that it makes this tinny buzzing noise when on the largest burner is high heat.

What is the monthly electric bill for an induction cooktop in Brooklyn? We cook almost every meal at home and the stove-only gas line is about $36 a month. Presumably you can get the clean-air effects with a regular electric stove as well.

One doesn’t have to swap out the full stove necessarily. If you have the room, then get a small cooktop and use it to supplement.

Induction is super fast and responsive.
Ikea has a 30 inch range and 30 and 36 inch cooktops. The cooktops are on sale with IKEA Family pricing this month. The better 30“ cooktop is $560, and adjusts automatically to pot size. They’re just as good or better as my $1,500 Frigidaire cooktop.
For pots and pans I‘d also recommend ikea.
They don’t consume more energy than gas cooktops, but as mentioned before you need to run a dedicated line and good service

Yes, I remembered the need for extra power after I hit send. Assuming I will have to have some hefty amount of extra bucks to even think about redoing a kitchen, much less buying an induction cooktop, I think it will be worth it to me to spend what I need to to upgrade the electrical for my health – though I’m saying that without a clue of how expensive that may be. Not an issue now, as I may not even be living where I am now when I have to the money to renovate a kitchen to my growing standards.

Though reading about the health aspects after I posted yesterday, I was reminded that it isn’t just respiratory health, but also cardiovascular health, that is affected by gas fumes – and we all need to be concerned with that as we get older.

LOVE induction cooktops. Quick and easy. But for me the real reason to buy one is that it significantly improves indoor air quality, even with an externally vented hood.

to what ed is saying: if you live in a small queens house like i do and have 100 amp service with say two dedicated lines for window a/c units and a dedicated for the laundry and a dedicated for the dishwasher, you will most likely NOT have the space in the box to put in a double pole 50; when i go to use my arc welder, i have to pop a breaker out to put the double pole for the welder in.

i would imagine that if you lived in a 3 story brownstone with 150 amp service and split units and three dedicated lines for appliances, you would encounter the same scenario i mention above.

if you encounter the situation I am in and do not already have the new slim breakers (i think ge makes them for GE boxes: i think two breakers sit in the space of one old one. i think), you can switch a few breakers out to gain some space. i have a GE box but it will not accept the slim breakers. so talk to a pro to see if you can do that-

in terms of equipment we run for a small shop, 50 amps is a massive amount of power.

@jane, right. the people on this board are in the don’t waste energy camp as well but for different reasons. for us on here, it is about the world we are leaving our children. for some of the other fathers the word “energy” and “money” are synonymous.
