Does anyone have any experience with or knowledge about indirect water heaters? We will be starting our heating system from scratch – is that the way to go for domestic hot water? I worry that it will be inefficient in summer when the boiler isn’t needed to heat the house.

They are way more efficient than conventional water heaters, giving you free hot water during heating season, and no more inefficient than plain vanilla units in summer. i would advise going for a stainless lined unit since you do not want to pay someone to check a sacrificial anode on a yearly basis. I personally like the Buderus SST line, but there are an endless number of great brands. Just make sure that whoever installs it rigorously follows the boiler manufacturers diagram and doesn’t take shortcuts by cheap out by skimping on valves, mixing valve, thermometers and flow checks
